Recently, I often feel dizzy and lightheaded. Please advise me on which foods I should prioritize to help improve this condition? (Tran Lam, Ho Chi Minh City)

Dizziness is a fairly common condition in many people, which can be caused by headaches, cerebral ischemia or diseases of the inner ear, the vestibular nerve (cranial nerve VIII) and the brain. The reason is that the inner ear is the part that is responsible for sending signals to the brain, through the vestibular nerve, about the movement of the head and body relative to gravity to help the body maintain balance.

In terms of nutrition, people who often suffer from dizziness should eat foods that are good for overall health and especially good for cerebral blood circulation. The general principle is to have enough energy, enough vitamins and minerals, low in sodium, rich in potassium, rich in fiber, and reduce saturated fatty acids and total fat.

You should prioritize foods that have anti-inflammatory properties, improve overall health and the immune system. An anti-inflammatory diet includes foods such as fatty fish (salmon, basa fish...), healthy oils, fruits, green vegetables and lean meats.

The brain is made up of fat. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to improve nerve function, improve cognitive ability and support the recovery of damaged nerve cells. You should eat foods rich in omega-3 such as salmon, mackerel, walnuts, macadamia nuts, cashews, peanuts... several times a week; do not eat fat or animal organs.

Cereals containing many B vitamins also help the brain function well, transmitting nerves from the brain to organs for the body to function. Food groups rich in fiber such as brown rice, eating lots of green vegetables, ripe fruits also increase the supply of potassium, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

In addition, you should increase your intake of foods and drinks that have sedative and diuretic properties such as lotus seeds and lotus heart; do not drink alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine.

Dizziness can be caused by pathological factors such as vestibular neuritis, cerebral ischemia, migraine, Meniere's disease (idiopathic hydrocele), trauma, and even a sign of stroke, brain tumor, brain abscess... Therefore, if you have prolonged dizziness, you should see a neurologist soon for examination and timely treatment.
