(HBĐT) - Along the concrete roads connecting villages and hamlets in Da Phuc commune (Yen Thuy) are vast sugarcane fields. Farmers are enthusiastically taking care of them to ensure timely harvest. In the past 2-3 years, the price of sugarcane has been at 6,000 - 8,000 VND/tree, with a stable consumption market. Sugarcane has become a key crop, helping people increase their income, improve their quality of life and sustainably reduce poverty.
People in Da Phuc commune (Yen Thuy) harvest raw sugarcane, the selling price ranges from 6,000 - 8,000 VND/tree.
Mr. Bui Cong On's family in Rang hamlet is one of the successful households from growing raw sugarcane, mainly the super sweet variety to supply factories in the area and neighboring areas. This sugarcane crop, traders purchased sugarcane at the garden at an average price of 6,000 VND/tree, sometimes 7,000 - 8,000 VND/tree, with total revenue estimated at over 200 million VND. Mr. On shared: "In the period of 2015 - 2017, the price of sugarcane was unstable, falling to about 2,000 VND/tree, there were times when no one bought it. However, in recent years, sugarcane supplied to sugar factories and for juice extraction has been priced well, and consumption has been favorable. Sugarcane growers in the area have selected and searched for sugarcane varieties that bring stable output and productivity. By actively applying scientific and technological advances in seed making, sugarcane plants are healthier and grow better than old varieties. Only spending money on seeds in the first year can keep the roots for the next 3 - 4 crops".
"Compared to other crops suitable for local conditions, raw sugarcane or purple sugarcane both provide stable income, 2-3 times higher than growing rice or other crops. This is a drought-resistant crop, does not require high techniques, and saves production costs" - Mr. Bui Van Tam, Rang hamlet shared.
According to the review, the whole Da Phuc commune currently has over 500 hectares of sugarcane with nearly 200 households participating in planting. Of which, the area of raw sugarcane is about 350 hectares in the hamlets: Rang (40 hectares), Heo (50 hectares), Nhuoi (30 hectares). In 2022, the yield from sugarcane will reach 67 tons/ha, the output will reach over 30,000 tons. Traders from all provinces and cities: Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Thanh Hoa and Hanoi come to buy.
According to the people, beautiful sugarcane plants are usually more than 2 m tall, have smooth, shiny skin, long stems, and a sweet aroma. To ensure the seasonal frame of the year, sugarcane is grown mainly in spring and summer. This is the right time to plant seeds because the weather is warm, with enough sun and rain for the plants to grow well. After about 12 months of planting, it is ready for harvest. The planting and care process needs to ensure enough light for the plants to grow well and produce high sugar content.
Identifying sugarcane as a key crop to help people increase income and reduce poverty, in recent years, the Party Committee and the government of Da Phuc commune have directed associations and unions to coordinate with functional sectors to strengthen training and transfer of science and technology. Households regularly exchange and share experiences in planting and caring for the crop to achieve the highest productivity.

We hope that authorities at all levels and functional sectors will pay attention, support and create conditions for people to improve planting and care techniques, apply scientific and technological advances to ensure productivity and product quality. Create links with businesses to consume products for sugarcane growing households, ensuring stable prices. Thereby aiming to build sugarcane as a key crop, contributing to increasing people's income, promoting local socio-economic development.
