He said that most of the people here are ethnic minorities, so in the past, people had the mindset of waiting for support and did not want to do business to develop their own economy. “Slow and steady wins the race. Through the movement, people have changed their thinking and ways of doing things. They have invested in raising pigs, cows, buffaloes, and planting some fruit trees to improve their income. One household can do it, two households can do it, many others see it and follow suit, and so on. Many people’s lives have improved. However, recently, we have continued to encourage people to replace acacia trees with more effective short-term crops,” said Mr. Dung.

According to Mr. Dung, in the past, villagers were still superstitious, and there were still bad customs in funerals, childbirth, or backward abstinence. For example, in the past, people carved a tree to make a coffin and then nailed it in. When it was time to bury them, they would cover them with dirt and run away because they were afraid that the forest ghost would follow them. Or if a couple had twins, they would only keep one person, and at the same time, the family had to offer pigs to the whole village... Through a period of propaganda and mobilization, these bad customs have gradually been eliminated.

Mr. Dung said that propaganda is done in many different forms, including telling people to understand so that they gradually change their perception. “Many young people in the village go to school in cities and districts, they see that the way things are done in the lowlands is very good; so when we propagate, they see that it is right and listen. Everyone contributes ideas, from there bad customs are gradually abolished,” Mr. Dung added.

Phuoc Son is known for its many gold mines. In the past years, many people from all over came to dig and pan for gold, and there was a risk of social evils, especially gambling and drugs. Although he is 81 years old, Mr. Tran Dinh Sach (Kham Duc town) is still enthusiastic about the community through propaganda work, mobilizing people to implement the policies of the Party and the State. Recently, when the State had a policy to invest in inter-village roads, he voluntarily donated more than 160m2 of land, and mobilized people to donate land and working days to speed up the completion progress.
