In June 2019, Wang Nan (37 years old), also known online as Wang Nuannuan, unfortunately fell into a 34m deep abyss at a park in Thailand after being pushed by her husband, Yu Xiaodong (38 years old).
At the time, Wang Nan was pregnant with her first child and the fall left her with 17 broken bones, requiring major surgery, more than 100 steel nails and 200 stitches. After the accident, she was unable to conceive naturally.

Fortunately, Wang Nan was still able to get pregnant through IVF. In September, she announced the birth of her baby boy.
After the unfortunate incident in 2019, Yu Xiaodong was sentenced to 33 years and 4 months in prison by a Thai court. However, he asked his wife to pay $4 million in compensation for the " loss of love and youth".
“ Yu and his mother thought the money was to compensate for his mental pain. His mother even blamed me, saying that his business was not successful, which caused him to commit the crime,” Wang said.
Yu Xiaodong’s actions are further complicating China’s judicial process. Former prosecutor and now partner at Grandall Law Firm Zhang Yongquan described Wang’s case as a “ dead end” and “ untenable situation.”
Mr. Zhang highlighted significant challenges, such as China's marriage law requiring both parties to appear in person in court and the complications caused by cross-border detention during proceedings.
" Every court session requires the physical presence of the parties involved. If one of the spouses is detained, a local lawyer or notary may need to go to the prison to authenticate. Then, the relevant legal documents need to be sent to the Chinese court through diplomatic channels," said former lawyer Zhang Yong.
