Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Egypt and Tunisia as part of a four-nation African tour before he travels to Brazil and Jamaica.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on January 11 that Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Egypt, Tunisia, Togo and Cote d'Ivoire from January 13-18 and then Brazil and Jamaica from January 18-22.

The Chinese foreign minister's visit to Egypt comes shortly after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrapped up his visit to Cairo. He met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on January 11 to discuss ongoing talks with Hamas brokered by Egypt and Qatar.

Egypt is the final stop on Mr Blinken's Middle East tour aimed at preventing the Israel-Hamas conflict from escalating.

The war in the Gaza Strip broke out when Hamas launched an unprecedented offensive on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,140 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to a tally based on official figures by AFP .

Hamas is holding about 250 hostages, including 132 who Israel believes are still in the Gaza Strip, and at least 25 are believed to have been killed.

According to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, Israel has responded with a relentless military campaign that has killed at least 23,357 people, mostly women and children.

According to AFP , historically, China has been sympathetic to the Palestinians and supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an “international peace conference” to resolve the conflict.

Mr. Wang Yi's long visit also coincides with the visit of Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang.

China's Foreign Ministry said Li Qiang will visit Switzerland from January 14-17 to attend the 2024 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting and make a state visit to the country.

Premier Li Qiang will then visit Ireland at the invitation of his counterpart Leo Varadkar.
