Research and restore the grave abandonment ritual of the Co Tu people

Recently, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has had a plan to support research, restoration, preservation and promotion of intangible culture of ethnic minorities at risk of extinction under the National Target Program on socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas in 2024. Among these, there is the Grave-leaving Ceremony of the Co Tu people in Doi village, Thuong Lo commune, Nam Dong district (Thua Thien Hue province).

According to the plan, in the fourth quarter of 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism assigned the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thua Thien Hue province, the People's Committee of Nam Dong district and related units to implement a number of contents such as: Survey, investigation, statistics, and collection of information on the traditional grave abandonment ceremony of the Co Tu people in Doi village to create a complete and comprehensive information database for the work of restoring, preserving and developing the traditional cultural identity of the Co Tu people. Research and evaluate the current status of change, difficulties and obstacles of this ritual in the work of preserving and promoting traditional culture in the current cultural and social development.

Co Tu sculptors will be an important human resource to support research and restoration of the grave abandonment ritual in the coming time.

In addition, hire consultants to support research and propose solutions to restore and preserve the tomb abandonment ceremony based on selecting appropriate elements and eliminating outdated and backward elements compared to current conditions. Coordinate with artisans and experts, organize 3 classes to teach some typical stages in the tomb abandonment ceremony process about sculpture and performing arts.

Organize performances, reenact some typical stages in the process of the tomb abandonment ceremony in terms of sculpture art (sculpture techniques for decorative patterns on the tomb, sculpture techniques for various types of statues, etc.) and performing arts (performance of da da dance, singing folk songs of co lau co lenh). Especially serving the development of tourism at the Co Tu ethnic traditional cultural village in Nam Dong district, built in Thuong Lo commune.

Gathering highly skilled artisans in some communes of Thuong Long, Thuong Quang... in Nam Dong district to organize the production of some typical products of the grave abandonment ceremony (sculptures to decorate tombs, statues,...). The products after completion will be handed over to the locality to serve the research, propaganda and promotion of the culture of the Co Tu people.

In addition, we will produce documentary films and print brochures about the Co Tu people's grave-abandoning ceremony to serve the research, propaganda, and promotion work, raising awareness of the work of preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Co Tu people in the current period. At the same time, we will promote the role of artisans in preserving and promoting the culture of their people.

Organize a scientific seminar to collect opinions on the orientation and solutions to preserve and promote the grave-leaving ceremony of the Co Tu ethnic group. Develop a scientific report on survey, investigation, statistics, and information collection on the traditional grave-leaving ceremony; the current status of changes in the current period; propose solutions to preserve and promote the effectiveness of this festival to serve the cultural, economic, and social goals of the locality, especially to serve the development of tourism at the Co Tu ethnic traditional cultural village in Nam Dong district, built in Thuong Lo commune.
