Australian Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son and his Australian counterpart agreed to study the development of Australian university branches in Vietnam.

On the afternoon of March 5, in Melbourne city, a working delegation of the Ministry of Education and Training led by Minister Nguyen Kim Son worked with Mr. Brendan O'Connor, Australian Minister of Training and Skills.

According to Minister Nguyen Kim Son, Vietnam and Australia have a good relationship in the field of education, training and vocational training. He thanked Australia for supporting human resource training for Vietnam in recent times. At a time when the two countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, further developing cooperation in education, training and vocational training "is very necessary and appropriate".

Minister Son hopes that the two countries will cooperate more in higher education and general education, focusing on developing cutting-edge technology industries, semiconductor chips, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

"I propose that the Australian Department of Training and Skills discuss and approve the Joint Working Group on Education to promote and encourage the opening of some branches of Australian universities in Vietnam," he said.

Minister Brendan O'Connor said he would study the proposals from the Vietnamese education sector leaders. He affirmed that the meeting was a great opportunity for the two sides to cooperate more closely in training. Australia has experienced difficulties due to a shortage of skilled human resources, so training cooperation will eliminate this shortage, as well as contribute more to the economic development of the two countries.

"Sharing experiences and cooperating in the field of education is a great opportunity to further improve the quality of education, lecturers and training activities of the two countries," said Minister Brendan O'Connor, affirming that cooperation between the two countries in higher education and vocational training will be prioritized in the coming time.

Australia provides about 70 government scholarships at all levels to Vietnamese students each year. In 2021, Australia also provided more than 50 million AUD (about 32.5 million USD) in aid for Vietnamese citizens to study abroad. The aid is also used to support alumni networking activities, short-term training, and capacity building for management teams at higher education institutions.

Currently, about 26,000 Vietnamese students are studying in Australia. In Vietnam, out of more than 400 joint training programs of universities, there are 37 cooperation programs with Australian schools.

The two sides are expected to sign and exchange cooperation documents in the fields of education, energy, innovation, technology, finance and investment.
