Former IT student achieved IELTS 9.0 on the first try

Talking to Dan Viet newspaper reporters on the occasion of the New Year, 25-year-old Phung Tien Thanh from Vinh Phuc happily said that he had just achieved IELTS 9.0 on his first try.

Tien Thanh was a student majoring in IT at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted. Since childhood, Thanh was passionate about mathematics and achieved many achievements in competitions, including the Gold Medal of the National Mathematical Violympic. He did not have much time for English. It was not until grade 12, when he decided to switch to block A1 for university entrance exams, that Thanh focused on studying systematically. Thanh graduated with honors from the Foreign Trade University.

Sharing the secret to achieving IELTS 9.0, Thanh said: "I have a motto, I will try to learn any word I see for the second time. When it appears for the second time, there will be a third and fourth time. Although learning one more word doesn't seem like much, after every 200 new words I learn, I feel like I've gotten a little better, the reading is a little easier, and that's the motivation for me to continue studying."

Reading is a skill that Thanh is confident in, because besides vocabulary, there is not much to prepare. Therefore, the most important thing is still to "plow" a lot of vocabulary. IELTS scores will not change if the number of new words does not increase. Most candidates who score low in this part still have low vocabulary.

In addition, some common mistakes in this section are due to misunderstanding the grammar structure or thinking about the wrong answer. According to Thanh, vocabulary mistakes are acceptable because not everyone has time to learn all the words, but mistakes in grammar and test-taking skills should never be repeated.

To overcome this, according to Thanh, learners should create an Excel file divided into two columns, one column to record the situation (describing the error), one column to record how to fix it, and from there progress through each topic.

Listening skills are also trained similarly to Reading. However, errors in this part are more diverse with factors such as pronunciation and poor listening reflexes. These are all things that take a long time to get used to, so it will be difficult for beginners.

Regarding speaking skills, according to Thanh, before practicing speaking, one needs to master the English phonetic table and learn pronunciation characteristics such as stress, linking sounds... Then, learners practice the habit of speaking to themselves, possibly starting with the simplest structures such as "It's about".

Thanh rated the Writing section as the most difficult because this is a skill that requires a deep understanding of the semantic differences between words. Candidates need to have a wide vocabulary and understand the requirements of the test to write a good quality essay. In addition, understanding is also required to make the essay convincing.

Studying Business but want to be an English teacher

Sharing about his current job, Thanh said: "I used to plan to study IT but later I wanted to do something more dynamic so I studied Business. When I finished 4 years of university, my friend invited me to open an English class, I liked teaching so I agreed. It was by chance but unexpectedly it became a passion."

Thanh also believes that young people should experience to find the most suitable job for themselves. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it is the job they love the most.

To advise students on how to get a high score on the IELTS exam, Thanh said: "You must determine that you must be determined to study. Realize that you only need to take the exam once, so give it your all. Don't study superficially, wasting time but in the end not achieving the desired results."
