The sound of the waterfall sometimes makes the wild birds fly up in surprise. Beautiful waterfalls become an indispensable stop when coming to the great forest.

Waterfall in the old forest

A new inter-village road has just been opened to Lap Loa and Mang Oi villages of Tra Tap commune. Along the road, you will see the Lay Sac waterfall looming in the clouds behind the old forest. You can see it, but it is not easy to get there.

We took a car from Tra Tap Commune People's Committee. When we reached the beginning of the red dirt road, we switched to motorbikes. The road had just been opened, the smell of red dirt filled our breath. There were some steep, winding sections. The driver had to be very steady to avoid falling into the abyss. About 15 minutes by car from the commune center, then a short distance over large, rough rocks, and we arrived.

Along with Nam Tra My, the mountainous region of Quang Nam has many majestic primeval forests, hot springs, and waterfalls interspersed among the mountains, creating a fresh and majestic natural landscape, which is a potential for developing ecotourism. However, the development of this tourism product still faces many difficulties, from the lack of investment in roads to the waterfall areas, and the lack of diverse support services such as accommodation and food.

Deep in the towering Ngoc Thien range, the Nuoc Choong stream winds and meanders through each rock cavity. From the quiet underground streams, the water suddenly turns and flows at the intersection between high rocks and the deep abyss, creating the Lay Sac waterfall today.

Born from a strong stream, “molded” by the characteristic steep terrain, Lay Sac has the appearance of rapids in the Truong Son mountain range. Even the most fastidious people, I believe, will be conquered by the majestic beauty of this wild waterfall.

Lay Sac Waterfall consists of two large streams, separated by a turtle-shaped rock. From the foot of the waterfall to the top, each stream is about 30m apart. The “Nam” Waterfall flows in one stream, water from above falls straight down, rumbling into the blue lake below.

The “Nu” waterfall is gentler, divided into two levels. The water flows along the rocky slope, down the first level, reaches the second level and then merges into the downstream of Nuoc Choong stream. This is also the only double waterfall found in Nam Tra My.

Waterfall tourism

Along the forest road leading to Nam Tra My, visitors will encounter many waterfalls that murmur all year round. Many people from the lowlands only know about the 5-tier waterfall - a waterfall hundreds of meters high, built on 5 stone steps. This place has become a place for entertainment and dating for both locals and tourists.

Lay Sac Waterfall was recently discovered to the amazement of the mountain people. Because before there was a road across here, the Lay Sac stream area was quite remote, going against the path of the people on the other side of the village. And the origin of the name is still a matter of debate among the villagers.

Some people believe that the name Lay Sac comes from the fact that on the turtle-shaped rock area, there are many rat holes. Each hole is usually several meters deep. The soil is moist, there is a lot of food, and rats like to swim, so this is an ideal place for them to live.

However, some people believe that in the past, a few Ca Dong people in the village found a large waterfall with strong water flow, so they often caught rats, gutted them for food, and from then on, it was called Lay Sac waterfall. Although there is a debate between "Lay" meaning "gut" or "Lay" meaning "hang", one thing is certain, that this beautiful waterfall is associated with rats (sac or sár in Ca Dong means mouse).

In the vastness of the forest, the sun shines through the waterfalls, creating brilliant rainbows. Below the two deep pools, the residents enjoy a cool bath. Some good swimmers dive to catch fish, then bring them to the rocks opposite the two waterfalls to grill.

The fragrant smell of fish, mixed with the intoxicating aroma of rice wine, spread throughout Lap Loa valley. All the fatigue from the journey instantly disappeared.

On weekends, many tourists from Tak Po go in groups to Lay Sac waterfall to avoid the sun. The waterfall is beautiful and relatively close, so this is the top choice for a trip to cool off after a week of work.

In the cold mountain wind, after a day of wandering in Lay Sac, the sound of the car's wheels carried people up the slope back to Tak Po. The laughter and giggling were still intoxicated, guided by the moonlight. Leaving behind was the murmuring sound of the waterfall in the night.
