The journey of Young Doctors following Uncle Ho's teachings, volunteering for community health in 2024 was organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union and the Vietnam Young Doctors Association from May 2024.
According to Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach, Vice President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union, the journey organized medical examinations and provided free medicine to youth, children and people in difficult circumstances.
Specifically, 21,217 young doctors nationwide participated in the journey directly and online; the number of people receiving direct consultation and medical examination was 1,136,135; the number of people screened for diseases via the artificial intelligence (AI) platform was more than 1,000,000; 2,997 people, patients and children in difficult circumstances received financial support or free medical support...
Within the framework of the program, the Vietnam Young Physicians Association organized a discussion on "The burden of chronic diseases and the potential for applying digital transformation in disease management".
Sharing at the Seminar, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tu, Deputy Head of the Central Youth Union's Solidarity Committee, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Young Physicians Association, said that in Vietnam, the trend of rejuvenation of chronic diseases is becoming a major concern for public health.
In the past, diseases such as stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney failure were mainly seen in the elderly. However, these diseases are increasingly common in young people.
Specifically, regarding stroke, according to statistics from the Stroke Center of Bach Mai Hospital, up to 10% of people with stroke are between the ages of 18 and 35. The rate of young people under 35 with high blood pressure is increasing, accounting for about 5 - 12%.
Previously, type 2 diabetes was common in people aged 45-65, but now many cases under 20 years old have been diagnosed with this disease. According to statistics, each year Vietnam has 8,000 more people with kidney failure, including many patients under 30 years old.
According to Mr. Tu, there is an increase and change in risk factors, including the use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, in just 2 years, the rate of e-cigarette use among students aged 13-15 has increased significantly (from 3.5% in 2022 to 8% in 2023). E-cigarette use is high in the young age group (15-24 years old) with a rate of 7.3%; the age group of 25-44 years old is 3.2% and the age group of 45-64 years old is 1.4%.
In Vietnam, through a synthesis of reports from nearly 700 medical examination and treatment facilities, it is shown that in 2023, there were 1,224 hospitalizations due to the use of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. Symptoms upon hospitalization were mainly due to: allergies, poisoning, and acute lung injury.
Presenting the results of a newly published study by the University of Public Health supported by the Tobacco Control Foundation and Vital Strategies, a global public health organization, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tu affirmed that the level of use of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products among Vietnamese youth is at a high level, especially when compared with indicators of traditional cigarette use.
In addition, the consumption of high-sugar drinks is increasing. According to the Ministry of Health, from 2002 to 2018, the consumption of sugary drinks in Vietnam increased from 6.6 liters/person/year to 50.7 liters/person/year, a 7-fold increase in 15 years. Vietnam ranks third in Southeast Asia in milk tea consumption, with a market size of about 362 million USD.
Based on the above situation, the Health sector has made a number of recommendations. Due to the increasing rate of young people using new tobacco products, it is recommended that the National Assembly promptly issue regulations to comprehensively ban these products before their use becomes more widespread, including banning the use, production, trading, import, advertising, and use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products.
At the same time, the health sector proposed to impose a 40% tax on beverages with high sugar content. If the above tax rate is applied, the budget revenue will be about 17,400 billion VND.
Research conducted by the University of Public Health also estimated that a 40% tax rate would lead to reduced consumption and reduce the rate of overweight by 2%, the rate of obesity by 1.5%, prevent more than 81,000 cases of type 2 diabetes, and save $24.55 million in medical costs.
