Long-range artillery from the front and from the 164th Brigade stationed at Mui Trau fired heavily at the military port and airport, destroying many enemy aircraft and warehouses. Da Nang airport was paralyzed, the enemy's communications center was destroyed, and their communications were cut off. The enemy troops here became even more panicked.
On the direction of Route 1, on the night of March 28, 1975, Division 325 was reinforced with a company of 6 PT85 tanks, attacking the temporary defense line of the 258th Marine Brigade on Hai Van Pass to penetrate deep into Da Nang.
On Route 14, despite many difficulties, by the morning of March 28, 1975, Regiment 9, Division 304 and all reinforced units had reached the assembly position, ready to open fire to attack Ti Tu and Da Den, creating a springboard to attack Da Nang from the northwest.
By the evening of the same day, the 9th Regiment and its tank, artillery, anti-aircraft, and engineering battalions were preparing to attack the enemy at Da Den when they received orders from the Corps to pursue the retreating enemy. Regiment 24 hid at Hill 1062, and the Regiment's reconnaissance cleared and opened dozens of kilometers of road to the south of Hill 1235 near Son Ga Mountain, creating conditions for troops to move faster. In the direction of Regiment 66, our units approached enemy posts, secretly cleared mines on both sides of Road 14. Artillery of Regiment 68 approached the infantry, fired to suppress enemy artillery, and supported the infantry attack.
On the afternoon of March 28, 1975, the enemy sent bombers to destroy the Ba Ren and Cau Lau bridges to block our pursuit route. However, thanks to good preparation, we were able to mobilize hundreds of large and small boats from the people on both banks to take our troops across the river.
From Quang Nam, at 5:30 a.m. on March 28, 1975, our campaign artillery began to control Da Nang, the 1st Corps Command of the Republic of Vietnam, and Son Tra Peninsula. The 2nd Division Artillery of Military Region 5 and the province's firepower heavily attacked Hon Bang, Tra Kieu, Nam Phuoc, and Cau Lau.
At 9:00 a.m. on March 28, 1975, the 38th Regiment defeated the enemy group blocking the north of Ba Ren Bridge. The 96th Regiment of the province captured Duy Xuyen district and Nam Phuoc town. At the same time, the 56th Regiment of the Republic of Vietnam and 3 security companies in An Hoa-Duc Duc fled across Giao Thuy Bridge to Ai Nghia. At 12:00 noon on the same day, Duy Xuyen district was completely cleared of enemy troops.
At Dien Ban, on March 28, 1975, enemy troops at the Trum Giao intersection, the two ends of Cam Ly bridge, Truong Giang post and Bo Bo stronghold fled. Our armed forces and revolutionary bases in various places called for 2,000 surrenders.
On the night of March 28, 1975, Regiment 38 crossed the Thu Bon River to capture Vinh Dien town. Regiment 97 from Dien Ban B area crossed Highway 12 to Dien Ngoc-Hoa Hai (Hoa Vang). The Quang Da Front's forward command post moved from Hon Tau mountain to Dien Hoa to direct the attack and uprising.
In Hoi An, the lair of the puppet government of Quang Nam, at 2:00 a.m. on March 28, 1975, the town's armed forces were taken across the river by the people of Xuyen Thai, Xuyen Tan, Cam Thanh, and Cam Kim by boat, and divided into two directions to enter the inner city. At 5:00 a.m. the same day, the units attacked the administrative building.
Also on March 28, 1975, the enemy's main force in Dai Loc was ordered by their superiors to retreat and defend Da Nang. Seizing the opportunity, Dai Loc District Party Committee mobilized the masses to rise up and take control of the area east of Cau Chim, close to the foot of Nui Lo. At 4:00 p.m. the same day, the main force and district troops attacked and occupied Dai Loc district town.
On Route 20, on the morning of March 28, 1975, with the support of artillery and tanks, the wings and spearheads of Division 7 and local forces simultaneously attacked and liberated Bao Loc town at 9:00 a.m. The remaining enemy troops fled towards Di Linh, causing a chain reaction of panic.
At noon of the same day, the enemy troops in Di Linh began to flee. Seizing the opportunity, we organized an attack, took control of the district and town of Di Linh, and captured many weapons, ammunition and equipment of the enemy.
On the Binh Tuy-Long Khanh front, Division 6 of Military Region 7 continued to pursue the enemy at base 4 on Highway 1, liberating an important area from base 4 to base 10 Rung La on Highway 1 (in Binh Tuy area).
