The artwork 5am, Hanoi wakes up - Il est cinq heures, Hanoi s'éveille attracted attention at S8 - Cau Giay station on the Nhon - Hanoi station metro line. The work depicts a train car made from more than 15,000 ceramic pieces.

The work was created by artist Nguyen Xuan Lam and was presented to Hanoi by the French Development Agency (AFD) through the Métis Foundation. The ship's hull is the image of a zoo-botanical garden that interacts with Thu Le Park near the S8 station.

The author said that the train car was inspired by the design of the Hanoi Leng keng tram in the early 20th century, hoping that this would be a link between the past and the present when displayed on the transit floor of the S8 station. The fossil train car is over 2.8 m high and over 3.6 m wide, made from molten ceramic pieces. The work was created to enhance the public transport experience and send a message of environmental protection to passengers.

The technique of drawing using many small criss-crossing lines was inspired by the weaving of the Jouy fabric pattern (Toile de Jouy) - a symbol of French culture. This pattern often depicts poetic natural scenes or mythological stories.

"I chose to design the ship's pedestal as a hexagon with the hope that the work would symbolize the friendship and cultural exchange between Vietnam and France in the 21st century. The images of the melting garden also evoke thoughts in viewers about the relationship between people, cities and nature," said artist Nguyen Xuan Lam.

According to the author, the process of making the train car was smooth thanks to close coordination with assistants and partners at Bat Trang pottery village. "From Paris to Hanoi, with the support of AFD, Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board and a construction team of 15 people, the artistic idea gradually became a reality after more than 5 months of intense work," said artist Xuan Lam, adding that he worked 12 hours a day for more than 2 and a half months.

The construction team also spent 3 months from morning to night to realize the drawing. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Lam divided his garden into more than 206 pieces. Then the artisans used screen printing technique to directly transfer the drawing onto the clay.

The train car model attracts the attention of viewers when arriving and leaving Cau Giay station. Thuy Duong, 19, took a photo with the work before leaving the station, saying she was impressed by the grandeur of the model.

According to the organizers, the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station elevated railway project is a symbol of the Vietnam - France relationship in sustainable urban development. On this occasion, the French Development Agency coordinated with the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board and artist Nguyen Xuan Lam to create a public work to create an interesting space, promoting awareness of climate change in Vietnam.
