The Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said the exercise involving the Russian Pacific Fleet and the Myanmar Navy will take place from November 7 to 9 in the Andaman Sea.

According to the newspaper, the two navies will mobilize ships and aircraft to participate in the exercise simulating "the prevention of dangers in the air, on the sea and under the sea as well as maritime security measures".

Before the drills, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, commander of the Russian navy, met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, head of the military junta in Myanmar, on board the Russian destroyer Admiral Tributs, and presented the ship's capabilities, the newspaper said.

According to AFP, Moscow is a close ally of Myanmar's military government, providing weapons and diplomatic support as the Myanmar military regularly battles armed opposition forces.

In September, Myanmar and Russia co-hosted an “anti-terrorism” military exercise in Russia’s Far East, with the participation of several ASEAN countries.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar said that since taking power in February 2021, the Myanmar military has imported weapons and equipment from Russia with a total value of up to 406 million USD.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has visited Russia several times since the coup in Myanmar and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin last year.
