Russia hopes EAEU-Iran FTA will be signed before the end of 2023

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk stated that the EAEU is very close to signing an FTA with Iran as the issue was brought to the EAEU Intergovernmental Council and received support from the heads of government of the countries.

On June 19, TASS news agency quoted Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk as saying that Russia hopes the agreement on a free trade area (FTA) between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Iran will be signed before the end of this year.

Mr. Overchuk made the above statement in an interview on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in Russia.

"The EAEU is very close to concluding such an agreement with Iran," he said. This issue was mentioned at the EAEU Intergovernmental Council, and received support from heads of government.

According to Mr. Overchuk, the EAEU is also promoting FTAs with many other countries, with which negotiations are underway, such as Egypt, India, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“All those countries are friendly to us and are also developing markets, so the economic center of the new multipolar world is shifting towards them,” Mr. Overchuk stressed.

However, he also admitted that even in a bilateral format, FTA negotiations are "very difficult and take years."

"Negotiators need to take into account many different interests. In our case, the interests of all five EAEU member states, their businesses and consumers are involved. All of this should be taken into account by negotiators. This is a complex process," he said.
