On September 22, Queenstown - a famous tourist city in New Zealand - declared a 7-day state of emergency to deal with heavy rain and the risk of flooding and landslides.

According to Xinhua, Queenstown Mayor Glyn Lewers said the move allows for the mobilization and deployment of resources for emergency services and disaster response agencies to assist those affected. Mr. Lewers added that many incidents of flooding and property damage have been identified and authorities are maintaining contact with those affected, including the evacuation of more than 100 people.
Earlier, authorities in Southland, a neighboring area of Queenstown, declared a state of emergency after flooding and landslides caused by heavy rain. Several schools and kindergartens were closed and transport services were temporarily disrupted.
