45 scholarships offered by the New Zealand Government in 2025 will open up the largest opportunity ever for Vietnamese students.

The New Zealand Government Secondary School Scholarship (NZSS) - a prestigious scholarship program initiated by the New Zealand Education Agency, is now accepting applications for 2025, exclusively for Vietnamese students.

Launched in 2019, the number of NZSS scholarships in 2025 has increased significantly, up to 45, the highest ever. Students studying in grades 8, 9, 10 in Vietnam, with an average score of 8.0 or higher and an English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or higher can apply for this scholarship.

According to the organizers, increasing the number of scholarships means that Vietnamese students will have more choices of schools when applying for NZSS.

Specifically, by 2025, the program will involve 45 quality secondary schools across regions/cities from the North Island to the South Island of New Zealand. The regions are all aiming to improve the quality of education, coordinating rich extracurricular activities to support the comprehensive development of life skills and academics for students.

In addition to the New Zealand national standard curriculum taught in most New Zealand secondary schools, some NZSS schools offer the Cambridge or International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes, providing a range of options to suit each student's individual abilities and orientation.

On the other hand, Vietnamese students can choose to study at coeducational secondary schools (similar to the school model in Vietnam), or single-sex secondary schools - a typical school model in New Zealand. At single-sex schools, students will experience a focused environment, helping them confidently develop and cultivate their strengths without being influenced by gender factors.

One of the notable new features of NZSS 2025 is the doubling of scholarship opportunities for candidates through the dual admission mechanism. Students will be able to register for two school preferences from this year's list of 45 schools and be considered for the NZSS government scholarship based on both preferences.

If you are not successful with the NZSS, you will continue to be considered for other scholarships offered by New Zealand secondary schools. This dual application mechanism ensures that you can maximise your chances of receiving a scholarship to study in New Zealand with just one NZSS application.

In addition to IELTS, the NZSS program accepts equivalent international certificates, including TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge B1 Preliminary...

In case the candidate cannot provide one of the above certificates at the time of application, but is confident that his/her English ability meets the requirements, he/she can still submit the application. After that, he/she will participate in an interview or take an English proficiency test.

According to Mr. Ben Burrowes, Regional Director of Asia of Education New Zealand, 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Vietnam, an important milestone in the diplomatic history of the two countries. In that context, he believes that increasing the number of NZSS scholarships in 2025 not only affirms the strong commitment of New Zealand schools, but also creates conditions for more and more Vietnamese students to realize their dream of studying here.

Applications for the New Zealand Government Secondary School Scholarship 2025 are open from 9 January to 16 March 2025. Successful applicants will commence their studies at a New Zealand secondary school in July 2025.
