Peaceful Hanoi in paintings

Việt NamViệt Nam04/11/2024

Street vendors, sidewalk cafes, and small alleys in the capital are present through the paintings of artist Pham Binh Chuong.

The artist describes the scene of a sidewalk corner in the afternoon, where there are coffee shops and fruit stalls. The work, titled Afternoon at Hoe Nhai, was introduced by the artist at the exhibition Going Down the Street 4, which took place from November 1 to 7 at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.
The artist recreates a peaceful scene through the painting Bright Alley in the District.

In 25 years of pursuing the realistic painting style, Pham Binh Chuong has created about 200 works about Hanoi. Over time, the author said his love for the city has not faded. Unlike the three exhibitions Downtown This time, the artist focused on exploiting the process of Hanoi transforming into a more modern city without losing its old features.

The work "Old House Corner" depicts an old house, next to modern architecture. Artist Pham Binh Chuong calls this "'gentle conflict''.
The highlight of Down to the Street 4 is the large-scale painting "Confidence", measuring 130x200 cm. The author spent six months completing the painting, saying that the work updates his new creative concept of exploiting handwriting left over from the movement of life. On the large old lime wall, he painted embossed lines of "concrete drilling and cutting", advertisements, and Western-style graffiti overlapping each other, showing the "competition" between old and new values.
As Hanoi becomes more modern, old objects such as bicycle pumps and wooden cigarette boxes gradually disappear. The author recreates the objects of an old sidewalk bicycle repair shop in the painting Lunch Break.
According to Pham Binh Chuong, in modern life there are still people who represent nostalgia. The author often chooses the image of grandmothers and mothers to express the message.
The painting Object depicts a stall selling bamboo baskets and trays placed on the sidewalk, behind which is the gate to the old apartment complex.
The artist used many cold colors, evoking a cold atmosphere in the work Winter Day.
Artist Pham Binh Chuong at the opening ceremony on November 1. He is 51 years old, has a Master's degree in painting, and is a lecturer at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. The author has organized five exhibitions with the same theme of Hanoi, including Going Down the Street 1, Going Down the Street 2, Going Down the Street 3, Roadside Stories, and Golden Palace.
