Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station
Warning, widespread heat wave is likely to last until around February 18 (the 9th day of Tet). Due to the effects of heat wave, the humidity in the air is low, so there is a risk of explosions and fires in residential areas due to increased demand for electricity. For many people traveling and returning to Ho Chi Minh City in the coming days, special attention should be paid to protecting their health from the risk of heat wave. Because heat wave can also cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heat stroke due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

El Nino brings early and intense heat
In 2023, a severe heat wave exceeding 37 degrees Celsius occurred on April 8-9. Specifically, on April 8, the highest temperature in So Sao (Binh Duong) was 37.5 degrees Celsius, Bien Hoa (Dong Nai) 37.4 degrees Celsius, Dong Phu (Binh Phuoc) 37.2 degrees Celsius. On April 9, the temperature in many places in the East continued to remain at 36 - 37 degrees Celsius. Ho Chi Minh City and the Western provinces were 35 - 36 degrees Celsius.
Many places in Ho Chi Minh City continue to have hot weather on February 16.
By early May, the South suffered a widespread heat wave. Temperatures ranged from 35 to 38 degrees Celsius, with Bien Hoa (Dong Nai) alone recording 38.7 degrees Celsius.
Thus, compared to the same period last year, this year the heat wave came early and was severe. This is due to the impact of the El Nino phenomenon which is at its peak.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting: El Nino will continue until March - May 2024. From June - August 2024, it is forecasted to be neutral.
The heat wave in the South will appear in the Eastern region from the second half of February and will gradually expand to the Western region in March, April to the first half of May. In the Northwestern region, the North and Central regions, the heat wave is likely to come earlier and appear more frequently than the average of many years.
Besides the heat, drought will continue in the Central Highlands and the South from March to April 2024.
The average temperature from March to May 2024, nationwide, is generally about 0.5 - 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years.
