This ancient villa was built by Governor Vo Ha Thanh in 1922 and completed in 1924. It is now 100 years old and is located in Quarter 5, Buu Long Ward, Bien Hoa City. All the construction materials of this villa were transported from France. With a hundred years of age and a structure that is still quite intact, the villa has great significance in terms of culture, history and architecture, especially the mark of French architecture in Vietnam.
The ancient villa was built by Governor Vo Ha Thanh in 1922 and completed in 1924. It is now 100 years old and is located in Quarter 5, Buu Long Ward, Bien Hoa City. All the construction materials for this villa were transported from France.
This villa was once chosen as the main setting in the once famous film "The Beauty of the Western Capital" in 1996. However, according to the design, the road along the Dong Nai River in Bien Hoa City will cut off about 9m of the length of the ancient house. This means that the entire hundred-year-old villa will be destroyed. The villa has not been classified as a historical-cultural relic by a competent state agency. The reason is that since 2016, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Nai recognized the architectural value of the structure and proposed adding this villa to the list of provincial-level relics; after that, the Provincial Monuments and Landscapes Management Board contacted the family many times to coordinate in preparing a dossier for relic classification, but the homeowner did not agree. Currently, the government can review and evaluate the project to include it in the list of valuable architectural houses according to Decree No. 85 of the Government to preserve the project. After public opinion voiced the need for preservation, the authorities of Dong Nai and Bien Hoa city conducted a survey and calculated and considered. Dong Nai province accepted, listened and decided to keep the century-old villa to preserve and promote the cultural, historical and architectural values of the heritage in Bien Hoa, which bears many historical imprints of the South. In fact, recently, the risk of disappearance of architectural heritage in large cities in our country has always been evident. The increase in mechanical population, means of transport, high-rise buildings deep in the urban core are increasingly putting pressure on the infrastructure of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Not only Hanoi's Old Quarter, the urbanization process, and architectural styles imported everywhere are a direct threat to nearly 2,000 relics of Hanoi. There have been concerns that the new prosperity will fade the splendid cultural features that have existed in the lives of the people of the capital? If we do not find harmony, we will lose the unique beauty of Hanoi! Most of the ancient buildings built during the French period have had their structures and interiors changed, and some of the exteriors have also been renovated to suit the business needs of the people. Building infrastructure in the city is an urgent need, but this work must be done carefully and systematically to both meet the needs of development and preserve heritage. Many heritages are being forgotten or completely disappeared. Some heritages are being "concerned" so much that they are deformed; some heritages are barely surviving because their identities have not yet been determined; some heritages always react, not accepting new elements in the development process... with their own reasons. However, there is a core problem that until we thoroughly resolve it, cultural heritages will still have to struggle and struggle. Architectural and heritage conservation experts believe that the heritage left by our ancestors does not increase, only diminishes. If it is lost, it is lost forever. Our responsibility is to pass on the rare heritages from the past to the next generations. Restoration needs to leave traces of those who built and restored them before us, leaving traces of the scientific restoration of our time, and at the same time leaving the work for those who come after to continue, if we do not have enough basis to do that work today...
