Improve efficiency of tea growing and processing

With an area of ​​over 14,000 hectares, tea trees play an important role in the development of agriculture and processing industry of the province. To increase value and develop sustainably, tea trees are gradually improving productivity, quality and processing efficiency.

In recent times, the application of science and technology in all stages from production to processing has contributed to improving the efficiency of tea production. Up to now, the proportion of new, high-quality tea varieties accounts for 78% of the total tea area in the province, forming concentrated production areas with a total area of ​​5,800 hectares. The form of production organization continues to be innovated, the area linked to production and consumption reaches over 5,000 hectares. In 2023, the income value from tea trees is estimated at 1,640 billion VND, an average of 116.5 million VND/ha.

The tea processing system is increasingly developing with an average processing output of about 60,000 tons/year. Of which, there are nearly 60 enterprises, cooperatives (HTX), production facilities with a processing capacity of over 1 ton of fresh tea buds/day, more than 800 household manual tea processing facilities. The structure of green tea products and other types of tea such as scented tea, matcha... accounts for about 30% of output. In 2020, the Phu Tho Tea certification trademark was granted a certificate of protection, contributing to enhancing the reputation, economic value, and competitiveness of the province's tea products.

Thanh Nam Tea Cooperative, Thanh Son District has a cultivation area of ​​20 hectares and is linked to about 80 tea growing households in Thanh Son and Tan Son districts. The cooperative's processing capacity reaches about 1 ton of fresh tea buds per day. Ms. Duong Thi Duyen - Director of the Cooperative said: "From a family-scale production workshop, the Cooperative was established in 2020 to link tea growing households, develop a variety of green tea products, and improve processing capacity. Currently, the Cooperative has equipped a relatively synchronous machinery system with sorting machines, improved tea mills, packaging machines, etc. The Cooperative has over 15 types of products, meeting the diverse needs of customers."

Some enterprises and cooperatives have invested in developing concentrated raw material areas associated with tea processing using new technology, applying advanced management systems, and strictly controlling food safety at all stages in the tea production, processing, and consumption chain. The province currently has over 20 enterprises applying quality management systems according to ISO and HACCP standards. Many enterprises and production facilities have applied post-harvest technology, product processing and preservation, initially deep processing, diversifying products with high-quality green tea products, Oolong tea, matcha, bottled tea drinks, etc.

UT Tea Investment and Development Company Limited, Van Linh Commune, Thanh Ba District specializes in producing black tea and green tea for export, with a processing capacity of over 1,000 tons of products/year. Ms. Le Thi Hong Phuong - Director of the Company informed: "In order to strengthen the connection with tea growers, linking processing with raw material areas, the Company is currently cooperating and consuming products with 300 tea growing households, with an area of ​​320 hectares. We build a strict production process, invest in machinery and technology, thoroughly professionalize production and business activities, ensure food hygiene and safety, create high-quality products, competitive enough in the market. Along with that, the Company is investing in developing raw material areas and production processes of purple tea buds - a typical product of Thanh Ba District to exploit the potential and value of this specialty product".

To increase the value of tea, improving the efficiency of processing activities is one of the decisive factors. In the coming time, the province will continue to promote attracting enterprises to invest in developing raw material areas associated with deep processing of tea products, building the brand and trademark of Phu Tho Tea. Adjusting the product structure, focusing on the stages of varieties and processing; reorganizing production towards strengthening contractual linkages between processing enterprises and cooperatives, cooperative groups, building raw material areas and product consumption.
