Nguyen Dang Sy Hoang, a student from Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, became the valedictorian of grade 10 at Gifted High School with 42.38/50 points.

Of which, Hoang scored 7 points in Literature; 6.8 points in English, 10 points in conditional Math and 9.25 points in specialized Math (subject with coefficient 2). The male student from Nguyen An Ninh Secondary School was admitted to the specialized Math class and was also the candidate with the highest score in the two exams of this subject at the Gifted High School, Ho Chi Minh City National University.

Hoang said that when he decided to take the entrance exam, he set a goal of being in the top 15 candidates. This year, the Gifted High School has more than 3,000 students registered, including 864 for Math.

"When I knew the result, I breathed a sigh of relief because I had achieved my goal beyond expectations," Hoang shared.

Hoang said that in addition to studying in class, he mainly gathered advanced knowledge of Math from Math groups on Facebook.

Since 9th grade, every day, I spend more than two hours looking at interesting and strange math problems online. When I come across interesting math problems, I copy them down and think about how to solve them. There are days when I come across my favorite math problems, I am so engrossed that I forget about my other schoolwork. Through social networks, Hoang makes friends and exchanges with people who share his passion for math everywhere.

"Through a Math group, I met and became close friends with a 9th grader in Quang Binh, learning from him knowledge and good solutions in the inequality section. This is the part of Math that I am not confident in," Hoang said.

Hoang’s joy in studying Math is to ponder and find many ways to solve a problem. This helps him maintain his passion for Math and explore and learn more knowledge beyond the textbooks. With social subjects, he concretizes the content through mind maps to memorize.

Knowing that he was often subjective and lost points for small details, in 9th grade, Hoang registered for extra Math classes to practice presentation skills and carefulness.

Being admitted to the Math class at the Gifted High School means Hoang will have to leave home to study in Ho Chi Minh City. This is also something that the boy's parents worry about.

Hoang convinced his parents that the school has many friends, good teachers, a dynamic and open learning and living environment that will help him develop more comprehensively in the future. Talent High School is also the place to train many candidates for the International Math Olympiad team in the Southern region.

"There are many friends from the provinces who come to Ho Chi Minh City to study at specialized schools. If others can do it, I can do it too. I will be independent early and more proactive in life," Hoang said.

Ms. Le Thi Hoai Thu, Hoang's mother, said that the family was very surprised and proud when they learned that their son was the valedictorian of the Gifted High School. According to her, Hoang is very proactive in studying and living. The family did not force him to go to a specialized school or selective class. Hoang decided on his own to study and choose a school.

"Hoang reviewed and supplemented the weak parts by himself, and learned the school's exam formats by himself. The family believed he would pass, but did not expect such a high result," said Ms. Thu.

Sharing about how to raise her children, Ms. Thu said that she values learning life skills so she often encourages Hoang to practice sports, interact with people, practice independence and take responsibility for his decisions.

Commenting on Hoang, Ms. Ha Thi Sau, the homeroom teacher of grade 9 and the person who directly taught Hoang Math during the two years of grade 8 and 9, highly appreciated the student's ability to self-study. According to Ms. Sau, many students are talented and good at Math, but few can self-study effectively from books and social networks. Whenever the teacher taught a certain topic, Hoang would research it himself to learn more.

"Hoang likes to solve math problems in his own way. When teachers give him a solution, he will try to find other ways to solve it. We used to argue about whose solution was shorter and better," said Ms. Sau. During those debates, she had to point out and convince Hoang which solution was effective and would get him full marks.

Ms. Sau said that in grades 8 and 9, Hoang won first prize in the provincial math competition. With Hoang's academic ability, Ms. Sau believes that he will develop further if he is guided by teachers and helped to develop his talents.

"I will try to study by myself and learn from many good friends and teachers to be able to achieve higher achievements," Hoang shared.
