The boat capsized in the middle of the night, with bad weather conditions believed to have caused the incident. Thirty-nine survivors have been rescued while a search for those still missing continues.
The death toll rose to five by the afternoon, according to the Greek coast guard. The incident became one of Greece's worst migrant tragedies in 2024.
Greece has seen a 25% increase in migrant arrivals this year, with particular growth in areas such as Rhodes and the southeastern Aegean Sea, according to the country's Migration Ministry.
Migrants often come from countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, and African countries, trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach European countries.
