US prosecutes suspect in leak of classified documents

VnExpressVnExpress16/06/2023

A federal grand jury in Boston has indicted Private Teixeira, a suspect in the leak of classified U.S. documents earlier this year.

Jack Douglas Teixeira, 21, was charged with six counts of "willfully storing and transmitting classified information relating to national defense," the US Department of Justice announced on June 15.

According to the US Department of Justice, for each charge, the suspect from North Dighton, Massachusetts, faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000 and up to three years of post-release supervision.

Teixeira, a private in the US Air National Guard, was arrested in April on charges of sharing classified documents in a Discord chat group called Thug Shaker Central, which he created with about 20 gamers who "shared a passion for guns, military hardware, and God."

The information in this chat group then quickly spread across social networks. The leaked intelligence included the Pentagon's assessments of the war in Ukraine, as well as US intelligence activities with both its opponents and allies.

Teixeira appeared in federal court in Boston in May. A judge ordered him to remain in custody while he awaits trial. Prosecutors argued at the time that Teixeira still posed a security risk to the United States and that "hostile" countries could assist him in his escape.

This is the biggest US secret document incident since Edward Snowden revealed a series of documents from the US National Security Agency in 2013.
