A total of 2,058 flights were canceled and 5,846 were delayed as of 5:30 p.m. local time, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Southwest Airlines led the list of cancellations with 401 flights, followed by SkyWest with 358.
“We expect some operational challenges in the Midwest today and possibly tomorrow due to winter weather,” Delta Air Lines said.
Southwest Airlines said in a travel advisory that some of its flights in Chicago, Detroit and Omaha may be affected.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned Thursday that clouds, snow and wind could delay flights at some airports.
Severe winter weather has also caused Chicago United to cancel 284 flights so far, with some cancellations extending into Saturday, as it awaits regulatory approval to resume flying Boeing's 737 MAX 9 planes.
The airline said in a statement that it was operating some scheduled flights by switching to other types of aircraft.
The FAA on Thursday opened a formal investigation after an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 crashed mid-air last week, forcing it to make an emergency landing.
