The US government has charged leaders of the Palestinian Hamas movement with a series of "terrorism" crimes, according to federal court documents released on August 3.
Six individuals, including Hamas' current political leader Yahya Sinwar and former political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in an assassination attempt in Tehran in late July, were named in a court document dated February 1, accusing them of "conspiracy to provide material support for terrorist acts" along with six other charges. The document also includes a request for their arrest.
In a statement, US Attorney General Merrick Garland affirmed the same day that the above-announced charges were just part of Washington's efforts to target every aspect of Hamas' operations.
Washington currently lists the Hamas movement as a "terrorist organization".
