Polls in Virginia will be open until November 2. Minnesota and South Dakota are among 23 states that allow voters to submit absentee ballots in person at election offices or other designated locations instead of sending them by mail.

Earlier, on September 11, Alabama became the first state to begin mailing ballots to voters who were unable to vote in person. This is one of 10 states to begin mailing ballots to voters more than 45 days before the November 5 election.

By law, military and overseas ballots must be mailed 45 days before Election Day, so ballots for these voters will be mailed on September 21, local time. Experts predict a large number of early voters in this year's US presidential election.

According to data from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the 2020 US election, more than 69% of votes were cast early, either in person or by mail, compared to 40% and 33% in the 2016 and 2012 elections, respectively.
