The US and UK have attacked Houthi rebels in Yemen over attacks by the Iran-backed group on cargo ships in the Red Sea, US media reported on January 11.

Some US media reported that fighter jets and Tomahawk missiles were involved in the attack. Meanwhile, US officials have not confirmed this information when speaking to AFP news agency.

Houthi forces and witnesses said the attacks targeted several cities in Yemen. Meanwhile, British media reported that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also convened an emergency cabinet meeting in London on January 11 to discuss the attacks on the Houthis.

On the morning of January 12, Houthi spokesman Abdulsalam Jahaf confirmed the attacks and stated, "The US, UK and Israel are carrying out attacks on Hodeidah, Sanaa, Dhamar and Saada. We will respond to them."

Meanwhile, Reuters quoted local witnesses as saying there were at least three explosions in the capital Sanaa.

A US official and a British official told CNN that the US and British militaries conducted strikes against multiple Houthi targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

The strikes were carried out by fighter jets and Tomahawk missiles against more than 10 Houthi targets from the air, sea and secondary launchers. These targets were attacked because they were capable of undermining the Houthis' continued attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

Houthi targets attacked included radar systems, drone storage areas, ballistic missiles and weapons firing positions.

Attacks in the Red Sea have escalated since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in early October. As Israel stepped up its retaliation for the attacks, the Houthis began targeting ships they accused of supporting Israel’s war effort, although many of the companies targeted said they had no connection to Israel or the Israel-Hamas conflict.
