After nearly 2 weeks of waiting, candidates taking the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City for the 2024-2025 school year have learned their exam results. However, the anxiety and nervousness of candidates will last for another 20 days to know whether they will win a place in a public school or have to go in other directions. The anxiety is even greater as this year, the benchmark scores of public high schools are predicted to fluctuate in all top schools compared to last year.

It can be said that the public high school entrance exam for grade 10 is the most stressful exam among all high school exams. From the hesitation when registering to choose your wishes, the pressure of taking an exam knowing in advance that only 70% of candidates will be admitted. After knowing the exam scores, they anxiously wait for the announcement of the benchmark scores. If unfortunately, they fail all 3 public grade 10 wishes, candidates continue to wait for the second round of additional admission.

Looking back at the exam results that have just been announced, in addition to the positive aspects such as the English score distribution, which many teachers rated as “better” than last year; the percentage of below-average exams in Literature decreased compared to last year, the Math score distribution has caused public concern because the percentage of below-average exams increased by more than 10% compared to last year. Along with that, although the average scores of the two subjects Literature and Foreign Language were quite high, there were still 56 exams with scores below 1 point.

Unlike the high school graduation exam, the public 10th grade entrance exam is a race for places and will determine the type of school students will attend in high school, so the competition is higher. In all 3 exams, although the levels of differentiation are different, they all build a complete "matrix" of 4 levels, including recognition, understanding, application and high application. Thus, if students study seriously and have clear goals when taking the 10th grade entrance exam, they will be able to answer questions at the recognition and understanding levels, with a minimum score of 3-5 points, depending on the exam subject.

From another perspective, the exam also raises questions about the orientation of an entrance exam. If we assume that the entrance exam must classify candidates, then the level of differentiation should be even between the exam subjects, avoiding the situation where one subject is easy and the other difficult, creating disappointment and even confusion for parents and students. Up to now, public opinion often compares the score distribution of this year's exam with last year's in each exam subject. However, a comprehensive assessment of the score distribution of 3 exam subjects in the same school year to review teaching and learning in general schools has not received due attention. In addition to statistics on scores by exam subject, it is necessary to add assessments by suburban and inner-city areas to find solutions to improve the quality of education in accordance with the characteristics of the area.
