With six times having his contract terminated by his parent club before the end of the term, Jose Mourinho is the coach who has received the most compensation from being fired.

According to British newspaper Sportmail , Mourinho received about 80 million pounds (more than 101 million USD) in contract compensation when he was fired. Of this, Chelsea alone paid the "Special One" more than 33 million USD. The Stamford Bridge team lost 22.7 million USD when they fired Mourinho the first time in 2007 and 10.5 million USD for the second dismissal in 2015.

The Portuguese coach received $21.5 million when his contract was terminated by Real Madrid in 2013. Mourinho's record compensation for a single dismissal is the $25 million he received when he left Man Utd in December 2018, just a few months after signing a new two-year contract until the summer of 2020.

Mourinho led Tottenham for 17 months before being fired and receiving $19 million in compensation. At that time, the Portuguese coach had two years left on his contract. When he was fired by Roma on January 16 - the sixth time his contract was terminated - he received only $3.7 million because the contract between the two sides was only valid until the end of the 2023-2024 season.

The total compensation Mourinho received from his dismissals far exceeded that of his colleagues. Following Mourinho was Antonio Conte with $47 million, including $33 million when he was terminated early by Chelsea in 2018.

On January 16, Roma announced that they had terminated the contracts of coach Jose Mourinho and his assistants. Mourinho joined Roma in the summer of 2021, under a contract until the end of the 2023-2024 season. The 60-year-old coach helped Roma win the 2021-2022 Conference League, the maroon team's first title in European competition, reach the Europa League final last season - where they lost 1-4 on penalties to Sevilla, and twice finished sixth in Serie A.

According to Sky Sport Italy , Roma players were unaware of the club's decision when they arrived for training at Trigoria at 10:30 a.m. Rome time. Mourinho's assistant Salvatore Foti arrived at the training ground an hour after Roma's announcement, and was "almost in tears." Club owner Dan Friedkin flew from the United States to Rome to inform the players in person of Mourinho's decision to sack him. Training scheduled for the morning was also postponed to the afternoon, and will be led by new coach Daniele De Rossi.

According to Calciomercato , Roma's board are unhappy with their results under Mourinho this season, with the team finishing ninth in Serie A despite having the third-highest wage bill in the division. Compared to the same period last season, Roma have won nine fewer points, conceded six more goals and won three fewer games. They also lost to arch-rivals Lazio in the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup and failed to top their Europa League group with lower-ranked clubs Sheriff, Servette and Slavia Praha.

Throughout the season, Mourinho has repeatedly blamed the busy schedule, the injury situation and hinted that the club lacks ambition and cannot spend big on the transfer market. In fact, in the summer of 2023, Roma recruited seven players: Romelu Lukaku, Leandro Paredes, Renato Sanches, Evan Ndicka, Houssem Aouar, Rasmus Kristensen and Sardar Azmoun. But of these, only Lukaku and Ndicka are regular starters, the rest have failed to meet expectations.

Hours after sacking Mourinho, Roma appointed Daniele De Rossi on a short-term contract until the end of the 2023-2024 season. De Rossi is a Roma legend, playing for the club from 2001-2019, scoring 63 goals in 616 games. The former Italian midfielder won three titles with Roma, the Italian Cup in 2007, 2008 and the Italian Super Cup in 2007. De Rossi then played for Boca Juniors for one season before retiring.

De Rossi was a member of the 2006 World Cup-winning Italian team. He was also one of Roberto Mancini's assistants on Italy's journey to Euro 2020. De Rossi led SPAL in Serie B last season, but was sacked after 17 games with three wins, eight losses and six draws.
