Classical music does not always wear a solemn, academic “coat”. Even compositions from hundreds of years ago still have a humorous color. With unique and creative techniques, the Sun Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will bring a special concert program “Classical Music with a Twist” on May 31 at the Hoan Kiem Theater.
The Sun Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will present a special concert on May 31 at the Hoan Kiem Theater.
The combination of music with visual and storytelling elements promises to bring unique, engaging experiences and a completely different sense of classical music to the audience.
“Classical Music with a Twist” is a concert program in which the SSO Orchestra takes inspiration from classical musical works, rich in creativity with humorous and lively language, receiving the love of both adults and children. This is also the message that the Organizing Committee wants to send to the audience who love classical music in the capital about the everlasting power of music with unlimited creativity and the ability to conquer all ages, erasing all boundaries.
The concert began with Franz Joseph Haydn's Farewell Symphony No. 45. Haydn's Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor is the first and only symphony composed in the key of F-sharp minor in the 18th century. What's more special is the very interesting story and message that the composer wanted to send to the audience behind this symphony.
At the age of 30, Haydn was the musical assistant to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy. He was also in charge of hiring famous musicians to serve the prince. At that time, the prince lived at the Eszterháza summer palace, and Haydn and other famous musicians also came to perform there. However, the stay at the palace was longer than expected, while the musicians were forced to leave their wives and children in the city of Eisenstadt, a day's journey from the palace. Missing their families, the musicians began to complain and asked Haydn for help. He accepted, but did not propose the problem directly to Prince Nikolaus, but expressed everyone's feelings by composing a symphony called Farewell Symphony.
The Farewell Symphony has a unique finale. During this section, the musicians would stop, blow out the candles on their music stands, and leave the stage one by one, until only the violinists, Haydn and the conductor Luigi Tomasini, were left with their violins muted. Finally, they themselves would leave the stage. As a music lover, the prince understood Haydn's message completely, and the orchestra returned to his family the day after the performance.
Appearing in “Classical Music with a Twist” this time, the work is highly anticipated by the public, not only because of the appeal of the creative music, the good heart of the composer, but also because of the talent of the Orchestra in conveying that profound story.
The SSO Orchestra is led by Music Director and French conductor Olivier Ochanine.
Next, the audience will enjoy the piece Le Boeuf sur le Toit (The Cow on the Roof) by composer Darius Milhaud, which will be performed for the first time in Vietnam. Milhaud originally composed this piece to be used as the soundtrack for a silent comedy by comedian Charlie Chaplin, but it was later successfully released with the ballet Le Boeuf sur le Toit.
The composer demonstrated his boundless creativity by taking the music on a journey through major keys using material from more than 14 composers and 20 famous Brazilian melodies. Sometimes the music was performed simultaneously in two different voices, as if two orchestras were playing at the same time. This was a great challenge to the talent of the artists in the orchestra and a special highlight of the concert that the audience was looking forward to.
The musical night ended with the work Peter and the Wolf by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. The work was first performed in 1936 at the Moscow Children's Theater. Through music, the author told a children's story with each character having a very distinctive personality in 3 parts with a structure similar to the sonata form but the themes developed very naturally, the harmony was led and suggested by the actions of each character. To this day, Peter and the Wolf is still considered a favorite classical music work of all children in the world.
“Classical Music with a Twist” promises to bring a completely different feeling about classical music.
“Classical Music with a Twist” promises to bring a new breeze to classical music by recreating an atmosphere that is both luxurious and fun and comfortable. With this concert, SSO artists once again affirm their talent, profound musical taste and delicate “touches” to bring art and new works to the public for the first time in a completely convincing way.
With many meanings conveyed in the works about family reunion, courage, bravery, intelligence and cheerful rhythm, the special concert program on May 31 is also an emotional and meaningful gift from parents to their children on the occasion of the upcoming International Children's Day.
