On August 29, the 2024 Asia Bridge Design Competition officially found the winners. This is the first year the competition is held in Vietnam, hosted by the University of Science and Technology (under Can Tho University).
Students will apply their knowledge to design ideas, manufacture, and assemble steel bridge models.
The competition attracted 21 teams from 18 universities in 6 countries and territories: Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Of the 21 teams, there were 15 international teams and 6 domestic teams with 209 participants (including students and lecturers of the schools). The organizing committee awarded 6 categories (each award selected 5 best teams) including: aesthetics, structure, accuracy, construction, presentation and cost.
Each team will come up with ideas for bridge models and calculate load-bearing capacity.
Mongolian University of Science and Technology ranked first in 3/6 categories (structure, cost, accuracy) and ranked second in 2/6 categories (presentation, construction). Thereby, the overall ranking, excellently won first place. Two universities, Barawijaya (Indonesia) and Fukui University (Japan) ranked second and third respectively. The 4th and 5th positions belonged to two teams from Can Tho University (team 1 and team 2).
Before that, the teams had gone through many important competitions on August 27-28. The competition results were evaluated by a jury of domestic and foreign professors. The main language used in the competition was English. Vietnam had 6 participating teams from 4 universities: Can Tho, Western Construction, Tra Vinh and Can Tho Engineering - Technology.
The team from Mongolian University of Science and Technology surpassed 21 teams from 6 countries and territories to win the overall 2024 Asian Steel Bridge Design Competition.
The attraction of the competition is that each team will come up with ideas for bridge models, calculate the load-bearing capacity of the components, manufacture the details, assemble and test the load. This requires each team to have experience in teamwork and effective problem solving. From the design to the construction stage, there must be perfect coordination between members to minimize construction time.
According to the organizers, participating in the competition, teams will apply the knowledge they have learned into practice through stages from conceptual design, manufacturing, construction, project management, material procurement, planning and cost management. In that spirit, the competition can recognize innovations and creativity in the field of traffic construction. From here, good ideas and models will emerge and be nurtured, contributing to improving the quality of technical infrastructure projects at home and abroad.
