The family is where the good cultural values of the nation are preserved. And among those cultural values, there is a culture of reading. But to develop a culture of reading in the family, the first thing parents need to do is to create a reading habit for their children. In other words, books must be brought into every family.
As someone who has worked for many years in promoting reading, and has held reading culture sharing sessions aimed at mothers and children, I have realized that reading culture must be proportional to the number of books in every Vietnamese family's home.
Nurture reading habits from the roots
Mr. Forbes - a famous German educator once said: " The fate of the nation lies in the hands of mothers ". That saying emphasizes the role of fathers and mothers in educating the future talents of the country.
Because of that role, parents play an important role in forming and building reading habits for their children. First of all, parents need to be aware of the necessity and value of reading. From that awareness, parents will have the motivation to pass on to their children the love of books.
But the question is: "Once parents realize the value of reading, how will they foster the habit of reading for their children?"
The Jewish people are small but have a Nobel Prize winning rate of more than 22% in the world. This is the nation that organizes the custom of burying books, book marriage ceremonies, book placement ceremonies in graveyards, coming-of-age ceremonies when children are 3 years old;... Every important milestone of the people here is associated with books.
Many of the Jewish inventions were made because they read and learned a lot from books. They loved reading so much that their parents always placed a bookcase at their children's bedside so that no matter how young they were, they could have close contact with books every day.
Parents play an important role in forming and developing reading habits for their children.
It can be said that if parents want their children to be book lovers, they need to find the right method and cultivate that love from the seed. The reading culture of Vietnamese people is not high because most of us have not been nurtured to love books since childhood. Therefore, it is necessary to form the habit of reading from the seed, the root. That habit will gradually grow as the child grows up.
Besides, letting your children have close contact with books regularly is also one of the “golden secrets”. Parents should equip their children with lots of books, so that the world of books fills every room. That way, your children will always live in a “book environment” every day.
Reading habits are the criteria for voting for cultural families.
In order for the reading culture of the whole country to develop, we all need to join hands and contribute. In this "war" for reading culture, we cannot fail to mention the presence of agencies, organizations, and governments in launching movements such as: All people read books, Each family has a bookshelf, Business bookshelf, School bookshelf,...
These movements need to aim at a specific destination. Although we know that this journey is still full of difficulties, if each person tries a little, over time, the whole group will realize the importance of reading and join hands to develop a reading culture.
Developing a reading culture is a big problem that cannot be solved overnight, but as long as everyone is aware of the necessity of reading, we will certainly prioritize and invest in reading.
The Party and the State have launched a lifelong learning movement. This is a meaningful activity. But we need to understand that reading is also learning. Because books are the place to store and synthesize the knowledge of mankind from ancient times to the present. Each person must understand history to have the foundation to create and draw a bright future.
In addition to mass movements aimed at promoting reading, it is thought that women's associations, youth unions, veterans' associations, senior citizens' associations, etc. are also the core forces that contribute significantly to promoting and encouraging reading habits in families and hometowns. They are like "propagandists" who help motivate family members to "turn off their phones and open books".
The family is the nucleus that binds individuals together to create a strong nation. Therefore, to develop national resources, it is necessary to start from the family. Each family should become a pioneer, and reading habits should be selected as one of the criteria for voting for cultural families in residential areas and neighborhoods.
Developing a reading culture is a big problem that cannot be solved overnight, but as long as everyone is aware of the necessity of reading, we will certainly prioritize and invest in reading.
The future of a Vietnam where millions of people read books is a dream that seems far-fetched, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be realized. And I believe that giving our children the habit of reading is giving them a great asset in the future.
