Building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity

(NADS) - General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has repeatedly emphasized the Party's consistent guidelines and viewpoints on building and developing Vietnamese culture:

An advanced culture, imbued with national identity, with the core content of national independence and socialism, Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh thought, plays a leading role in the spiritual life of society, inheriting the fine cultural traditions of the nation, while selectively absorbing the achievements and cultural quintessence of the world in order to strive to build a civilized and healthy society for the true interests and dignity of human beings.

The book "Building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity" by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has just been introduced to the people of the whole country, clearly depicting the thinking, ideology, guidelines, and viewpoints of the General Secretary. The book is a selection of 92 articles, speeches, and talks by the Party leader on building Vietnamese culture over the past 60 years.

The book "Building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity" by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was chaired by the Central Propaganda Department, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the National Political Publishing House Truth, Communist Magazine, Vietnam News Agency and relevant agencies to edit and publish. Deployed since March 2023, the book was completed and launched on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2024).

Three years ago, the second National Cultural Conference held in 2021 to implement the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress was considered a particularly important event for the awareness of Party committees at all levels, the Party and the whole society. At the Conference, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong emphasized the task of reviving and developing Vietnamese culture to meet the requirements of rapid and sustainable development. Culture is the spiritual foundation of society, both a goal and an endogenous strength, an important driving force for national development. It is determined that cultural development must be synchronous and harmonious with economic growth and social progress. This is a fundamental orientation of the process of building socialism in Vietnam, demonstrating the superiority of our regime, as Uncle Ho used to say, culture lights the way for the nation. From the culture of national salvation, the culture of national construction to the culture of development resources, that ideology has been inherited and developed by the Party through the Congresses, for the goal of a prosperous country and happy people. In the book, all the policies, guidelines and leadership results of the Party on cultural development are mentioned in depth by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Looking back at the movements in local ministries and branches in recent times, especially after the 2021 National Cultural Conference, it can be affirmed that there has been a comprehensive change, especially in the awareness of Party committees at all levels about building and developing culture, the Party's policies and the General Secretary's instructions have truly come into life.

The capital Hanoi is an example. In the period of 2021-2025, the city invested more than 14,000 billion VND to restore and renovate relics and scenic spots, and many historical and cultural sediments were revived. A separate resolution of the City Party Committee was issued, identifying cultural tourism and handicrafts as strengths in developing the cultural industry. The Hanoi cultural development plan was updated and supplemented to the city planning with the goal that by 2025, the cultural industry will contribute about 5% of the city's GRDP. Over the past 3 years, thousands of events have been organized, creating a clear change in the rhythm of cultural life.

The book consists of three parts.

Part 1 "Culture is the soul of the nation", including 19 speeches and articles by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the National Cultural Conference implementing the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party; the Central Executive Committee Conference, the National Conference on Ideological and Cultural Work, the National Propaganda Conference... With convincing arguments, rich and vivid evidence, he specifically explained the connotation of the concept of building an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity; analyzed the role and especially important position of culture in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland; goals, tasks and solutions to fully and comprehensively promote cultural values.

Part two “Comprehensive and synchronous development so that culture is truly an endogenous strength and a driving force for sustainable national development”, selected 73 speeches, articles and letters of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on cultural fields as well as the process of building and developing cultural agencies. With rich practice and sharp theoretical thinking, a deep understanding of the characteristics of each type of culture, the General Secretary has given comprehensive instructions on the fields of literature, arts; education, training; science, technology; press, publishing;…

Part three "From the cultural thesis of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to the reality of life", selects 32 articles, interviews with cadres, party members and people in research, study and implementation, concretizing the Party's policies and guidelines, the guiding opinions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the National Cultural Conference, associated with building the national value system, cultural value system, family value system and standards of Vietnamese people.

Associate Professor, Doctor, Musician Do Hong Quan, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, affirmed: " Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong's book has demonstrated his profound knowledge and subtle understanding of the nature, characteristics and features of culture, of each type of culture, literature and art. Through many periods and in many positions, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has always paid deep attention to the cause of building, preserving and developing Vietnamese culture, especially paying attention to literature and art and the team of artists and intellectuals of the country."
