Expanding many emergency stops, adding signs on Cam Lo-La Son highway

On the afternoon of March 12, speaking with Giao thong Newspaper, the leader of the HCM Road Project Management Board said that the Board had just met with contractors and functional units to agree on technical plans and implement the construction of items to adjust and supplement the traffic safety system, and expand many emergency stop locations on the Cam Lo-La Son expressway from March 14.

The interdisciplinary delegation inspected, reviewed, and proposed solutions to strengthen traffic safety measures on the Cam Lo - La Son expressway for practical implementation from March 14.

Accordingly, the adjustment will be piloted on the first 37km of the Cam Lo - La Son expressway section through Quang Tri.

Contractors in these packages will add reflective studs on the road centerline, reflective markers on both sides of corrugated iron guardrails, and add some sign clusters at narrow locations (outside the area expanded to 4 lanes).

At the same time, increase traffic signs and instructions for overtaking areas, preparation for and completion of overtaking points, intersections on the route, etc.

Notably, at the locations where the roadbed is completed with a scale of 4 lanes, the functional units proceed to expand the emergency stopping strip with a layer of crushed stone and asphalt, with each expansion point being at least 250m long and up to 5-6m wide, reaching the full scale of the roadbed for 4 lanes.

The distance between two emergency stop extension points is about 3-5km, according to current regulations.

According to statistics from the HCM Highway Project Management Board, the Cam Lo - La Son Expressway is nearly 100km long, of which more than 37km passes through Quang Tri, the rest through Thua Thien - Hue.

During the divergence phase, on the entire expressway, there are currently 25km invested in completing the scale of the 4-lane roadbed, of which, about 13km is invested in completing the scale of the 4-lane road surface at 9 locations allowing overtaking (each section is about 1.5km long).

In March 2024, functional units and contractors will expand the emergency stopping strip at locations where the roadbed has been completed to 4 lanes, but the surface has not been completed (only 2 lanes are in the phased phase).

Cam Lo - La Son Expressway is invested in 2-lane phases, of which 25km is invested in roadbed with 4-lane scale.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Le Van Sau, Deputy Director of the HCM Road Project Management Board, said that recently, the investor and the Vietnam Road Administration reviewed current regulations and consulted with experts to adjust and expand this emergency stopping strip at locations where a 4-lane roadbed has been invested.

In addition, functional units reviewed and adjusted the pilot road centerline paint on the expressway section through Quang Tri, in the direction of adjusting to open more overtaking positions on straight sections with clear visibility.

At the same time, shorten or lengthen the existing permitted overtaking locations in the 2-lane section, and arrange a one-way overtaking plan for these locations (organize painting of solid and dashed center lines).

“The goal in March is to complete the locations for adjusting and supplementing the traffic safety system and expanding the emergency stopping strip, thereby improving the effectiveness of ensuring traffic safety during the operation of the Cam Lo-La Son expressway in accordance with the scale of investment in the phased phase and the current status of the route,” said Mr. Sau.

Adding many types of signs on Cam Lo - La Son highway

According to the previous agreement of the interdisciplinary inspection team (Vietnam Road Administration, Highway QLDB II, Traffic Police Department, Traffic Safety Board of Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue...), many signs were added on the Cam Lo - La Son expressway.

In which, the 2-lane section allows overtaking, arrange some additional signs such as "Pay attention to the risk of head-on accidents" and 300m from the end of the overtaking position, arrange a sign "Pay attention to the end of the road section allowing overtaking" along with an additional sign of 300m.

For roads with 2 lanes that do not allow overtaking, add a sign "No overtaking on road" starting at the solid painted line; arrange a sign every 500m warning "Stay on the right side of the road, at the allowed speed to avoid head-on accidents".

For 4-lane sections that allow overtaking, when preparing to end the overtaking lane, add a sign "Attention, end of overtaking lane" and a secondary sign of 300m. In addition, arrange 3 signs including: "End of dual carriageway", "Road narrowing" with the secondary sign "Distance to signal object" to the starting position of narrowing and the sign "Slow down" and this group of signs is repeated twice at 200m and 100m intervals...
