Cellist Ha Mien performs MV "Quang Binh, my homeland" at Son Doong cave

Quang Binh, my hometown, is one of the typical compositions of musician Hoang Van. The idea of playing this song in Son Doong by cellist Ha Mien was enthusiastically supported by Oxalis Adventure Company (the unit currently operating the Son Doong tour).

What is special is that the song "Quang Binh, my hometown" (My Father 's song) was arranged for cello by the late musician's son - conductor Le Phi Phi. The conductor said: "My father's song "Quang Binh, my hometown " (My Father's song) is a song with a melody reminiscent of the Ho Le Thuy melody of Quang Binh combined with the melody of the Northern Delta. The pentatonic scale of the song would be very difficult to arrange for solo performance of European classical musical instruments with a 7-tone key. When arranging it for solo cello, we kept the originality of the melody. Combined with that, we added classical European harmonic intervals, free-flowing phrases (cadanza), octave changes... with typical solo techniques, the forte of classical string instruments in general and cello in particular. The result is an original "Quang Binh, my hometown" (My Father's song) resounding through the cello playing without accompaniment in the style of solo classical music".

The overwhelming beauty of Son Doong cave in MV

The MV records the journey to conquer the natural wonder of the world by cellist Ha Mien and his members over 4 days and 3 nights. After the tiring journey of crossing mountains and streams, everyone together let their souls into the soulful cello melody, containing both the pain and indomitable spirit of the past of the people of Quang Binh and their pride in the majestic landscape of Son Doong. Notably, at the beginning and end of the MV, the music used was arranged by the late musician Hoang Van for singer Kim Oanh to sing in 1965.

“I would like to dedicate this piece of music to the people of Quang Binh, a heroic land that suffered millions of tons of bombs and bullets during the war, and countless people died to protect the peace here. As my cello blends into the quiet space of the cave, I want to send my heart to those who sacrificed their blood and bones for the country. I hope that my cello will spread music to everyone, especially the people of Quang Binh,” Ha Mien shared.

Artist Ha Mien shared that the MV "Quang Binh, my homeland" is a musical gift she wants to give to the people of Quang Binh and the audience who love classical music.

When deciding to perform the famous piece Quang Binh que ta oi , the female artist faced the challenge of arranging it for cello, because the melody of the piece was already "difficult" for the singer to perform, so the cello was not convenient. By chance, her friends arranged for her to discuss with conductor Le Phi Phi when he returned to the country to commemorate the death of musician Hoang Van. The conductor encouraged Ha Mien to have more creative inspiration, to find a way to perform the piece in a simple, familiar way while still maintaining the spirit of the song.

To have the majestic MV Quang Binh, my hometown, in Son Doong, cellist Ha Mien and the filming crew had to take advantage of every minute so as not to affect the overall schedule of the whole crew. In return for that hard work, the whole crew was happy to be able to put the image of the pristine vegetation like the "garden of Eden" of Son Doong cave into the MV.

Bui Ha Mien is a lecturer at the Vietnam National Academy of Music and a key member of the Hanoi Symphony Orchestra. She began her musical journey at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music, now the Vietnam National Academy of Music, under the guidance of Professor Vu Huong.

She completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Music and Arts Vienna (Austria) MDW under the guidance of Professor Elizabeth Pfefferkorn Meissl. In 2021, she collaborated with Dutch musician Ad Van Dongen to release her debut album called Romance in Hanoi.

In 2023, she released her second album Mien - When Cello Sings , continuing to affirm her talent and musical creativity, bringing the cello closer to the audience.
