On the morning of May 29, in Bat Xat district, Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee and the Tobacco Harm Prevention Fund organized a rally to respond to World No Tobacco Day (May 31) and National No Tobacco Week (May 25 - 31) in 2024.
Attending the rally were leaders of a number of provincial departments, branches, sectors and organizations; leaders of localities, units, businesses and a large number of people in Bat Xat district.

World No Tobacco Day 2024 has the message "Protecting children from the tobacco industry".
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 toxic chemicals, of which 69 are carcinogenic; tobacco use is the cause of more than 25 dangerous diseases for both smokers and non-smokers who regularly inhale cigarette smoke, such as: cancer, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, mental health, reproductive health in both men and women. Tobacco use is the cause of more than 8 million deaths worldwide each year, of which more than 7 million people die from direct tobacco use and about 1.2 million people die from passive smoking.

In Lao Cai province, activities to prevent and combat the harmful effects of tobacco have been implemented since 2015 and have achieved many results: the number of smokers has decreased over the years; the number of passive smokers has decreased significantly in places where smoking is prohibited; activities to build a smoke-free environment have been promoted in agencies, units, medical facilities, schools, factories, hotels, etc.
However, in recent years, new types of tobacco have appeared, especially electronic cigarettes, which are penetrating the youth. Therefore, promoting the implementation of the tobacco harm prevention program will contribute significantly to the work of protecting, caring for and improving people's health, protecting future generations.

Launching the response to World No Tobacco Day on May 31, National No Tobacco Week (from May 25 to 31), the leaders of the Department of Health requested all levels, sectors, localities, agencies and all people to continue to promote propaganda work so that people can access more information about the harmful effects of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, etc.; organize and implement activities to build a smoke-free environment in agencies, units and localities; promote the responsibility of heads of agencies, organizations and localities in implementing the smoking ban; strengthen child protection, raise awareness of children, adolescents and the community about the harmful effects of cigarettes and new tobacco products, etc.

Immediately after the rally, delegates, union members and youth organized a parade, cheering and propaganda in response to World No Tobacco Day on May 31 and National No Tobacco Week.
