On the morning of January 17, Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, made comments on the weather situation during the Lunar New Year 2025.

According to Mr. Lam, during the Lunar New Year, there is very little possibility of storms or tropical depressions appearing in the East Sea.

During the period before Tet from January 17 to 25 (December 18-26), the Northern region will have light fog in the morning, sunny and cold during the day; the Central region, from Thanh Hoa to Hue City, will have cloudy and cold weather.

The area from Da Nang to Binh Thuan in the North has cold nights and mornings, and light sunshine during the day. The Central Highlands and the South have cloudy nights and early mornings, fog and light fog, and sunny days, with no heat.

During the main days of Tet, from January 27 to 31 (ie 28th to 3rd day of Tet), the Northern region is affected by the Northeast monsoon, the temperature is approximately the same as the average of many years, it is cold, mountainous areas have severe cold, the Northeast has days of light rain and drizzle.

The North Central region has light rain in some places and is cold. The Central and South Central regions have scattered rain and showers, with the rain concentrated before January 28 (29th of Tet).

The Central Highlands and the South generally have little rain and sunny weather (no heat).

During the 2025 Lunar New Year, the coastal areas of the Southeast region will be affected by a high tide from January 30 to February 2 (the 2nd to the 5th day of the Lunar New Year). The highest peak tide during this period can reach 4.1 m, causing localized flooding in some coastal areas and river mouths.

In 2025, salinity intrusion will be higher than the average of many years.

Commenting on the general weather situation in 2025, Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam said that the storm season will begin to appear around June, the number of storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea and affecting the mainland is likely to be at the average level of many years with about 11-13 storms, affecting the mainland about 5-6 storms.

Heat waves are likely to appear similar to the average of many years: Heat waves are likely to begin appearing in the Southern region and the Central Highlands around the first half of March; the Northwest region of the North, the Western mountainous region. The North Central region around April and the Northeast region, the Central coastal region from around May onwards. It is likely that heat waves in 2025 will not be as severe and prolonged as in 2024.

In 2025, the number of widespread heavy rains occurring nationwide will be approximately the same as the multi-year average (about 20). Widespread heavy rains are likely to start in June in the North, then gradually move south and end around December in the Central provinces.

Saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta is higher than the average of many years, from February to April 2025, saline intrusion increased, affecting people's lives and agriculture in localities. However, saline intrusion is not as serious as in the dry seasons of 2015-2016 and 2019-2020.
