(CLO) On the evening of March 17, a Lanhsa (Honduras) airline plane crashed into the sea after taking off from Roatán Island, off the coast of Honduras. According to local authorities, the accident killed 6 people.

Meanwhile, Roatán's police chief, Lisandro Muñoz, confirmed to Noticiero Hoy Mismo that the plane crashed into the water shortly after leaving the runway. "The rescue and recovery work is very difficult because the plane crashed into the sea," he stressed.
There was no official weather report at the time of the accident, but the area is prone to strong winds and rough seas, which can affect takeoffs and landings.
The crashed Jetstream plane was carrying 17 people, including three crew members, according to information from the Honduran Transport Minister. However, the exact number of casualties has not yet been fully announced.
A passenger list published by local media showed that the flight included one US citizen, one French citizen, as well as two minors. The plane was scheduled to fly to La Ceiba airport, located on the Honduran mainland.
Lanhsa (Línea Aérea Nacional de Honduras) is a small airline from Honduras that operates mainly domestic and short-haul routes. It has a safe operating record but has been criticized for its aircraft maintenance procedures.
Roatan, a popular tourist destination in Honduras, has had several air crashes in the past. In 2022, a private plane crashed while landing, killing five people.
