Man City reaches agreement to buy midfielder for $65 million

Wolves have agreed to sell Portugal international Matheus Nunes to Man City for $65 million.

The two clubs reached a verbal agreement on August 30, but are still preparing the official procedures for Nunes to undergo a medical in Manchester. The above amount includes additional fees, the 25-year-old midfielder is expected to cost the same as another Man City recruit, winger Jeremy Doku.

The fee is lower than Wolves' asking price, in exchange for the loan of 22-year-old midfielder Tommy Doyle from Man City, with the option to buy him for just $6 million. Doyle is valued at $19 million, despite having played just one Premier League game for Man City.

Nunes burst onto the scene with Sporting in Portugal before becoming Wolverhampton's most expensive signing in the summer of 2022. He played just one season for Wolves, scoring once in 41 games before being targeted by Man City. Against Man Utd in the first round, Nunes and Brazilian international Matheus Cunha caused plenty of trouble for the opposition.

Nunes is 1.84m tall, a central midfielder, and is considered a complete attacker and defender. He could be Man City's fourth new signing in the summer of 2023 after Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and Doku. The amount they spent on transfers will be up to 265 million USD, compared to the revenue of 127 million from player sales.

Nunes can play in midfield with Rodri and Kovacic, when Kalvin Phillips is not trusted. Doku is good at playing on the wing and is expected to replace Riyad Mahrez.

Nunes is part of Portugal's squad for the 2022 World Cup, just a year after making his senior debut. He has played 11 international games, scoring once against Turkey in the World Cup play-offs.
