Doctor Luu Danh Huy, Deputy Head of the Department of Upper Limb Surgery and Sports Medicine, examines and consults patients after surgery.

Among the four most recent cases of firecracker accidents hospitalized was patient PTN (14 years old, residing in Bac Giang). According to the family, out of curiosity, he used a firecracker and had an accident while holding it in his hand, resulting in his hand being crushed.

After the accident, the patient was taken to a lower-level hospital for first aid and transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital with crushed wounds on fingers 3-5 and soft tissue injuries on the hand. Doctors performed emergency surgery to create a truncated tip of the metacarpal bone of the 3-5th finger, debrided the crushed muscle mass, and fixed the metacarpal bone of the 1st finger of the right hand.

Another male patient in Nam Dinh was also hospitalized after using firecrackers with a friend and the firecracker exploded while still holding it in his hand. At the hospital, doctors performed wound debridement, thorough irrigation; repositioned and inserted pins in the metacarpal joint; and repaired the amputation of the fourth finger.

Another case of serious and complicated injuries was a male secondary school student in Quang Ninh. The patient was transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in a state of complex crushed wounds on the palm of the right hand, jagged, dirty, deep wound, contusion, multiple soft tissue hematomas, open dislocation of the ossicle mass; fracture and dislocation of the first metacarpophalangeal joint, wound on the left hand, and abdominal wall wound.

The patient was treated by a doctor. officer on duty timely emergency surgery to treat the wound: wash the wound many times, cut and clean, treat soft tissue wounds, repair the stump of the 5th finger, reposition and suture the ligament of the 1st metacarpal joint, and fix the bone spur with a needle.

Through the practice of surgical treatment for accidents caused by firecrackers, Dr. Luu Danh Huy, Deputy Head of the Department of Upper Limb Surgery and Sports Medicine, said that most cases of firecracker accidents caused by the use of homemade firecrackers require emergency surgery due to dirty wounds and high risk of infection.

Most cases have hand injuries, with a high rate of amputation of fingers; in addition, it also causes other injuries such as soft tissue, skin, tendons, fingers and nerves. Especially in young people, injuries to the dominant hand will affect daily activities, work and leave lifelong sequelae.

According to Dr. Huy, despite actively promoting the serious consequences of homemade fireworks, every time before Tet, many patients are hospitalized with serious injuries.

To prevent injuries to their children and ensure community safety, people need to strictly comply with the provisions of the law on the management and use of fireworks; do not arbitrarily manufacture explosives or fireworks that threaten the lives of themselves and those around them. Especially for school-age children, parents and schools need to coordinate propaganda and education to limit unfortunate consequences that may occur.
