The ecological shrimp farming model under the mangrove canopy brings high economic efficiency and contributes to environmental protection. Up to now, the ecologically certified shrimp farming model of the district has a productivity of 150 kg/ha/year, ecological shrimp products are exported to demanding markets such as the US, Japan, EU, with a selling price of 5-10 thousand VND/kg higher than that of traditionally farmed shrimp.

In addition, the improved 2-phase extensive shrimp farming model combined with crab farming is being replicated. On average, households that combine crab farming have an annual income of more than 40 million VND/ha from crabs. In particular, the combination of raising blood cockles, groupers, and brown fish in shrimp ponds helps people make the most of natural food sources and increase their annual income by over 100 million VND.

Ngoc Hien district encourages adjacent shrimp farming households to cooperate in production to reduce investment costs and increase productivity for successful farming.

Ngoc Hien district has 23,000 hectares of specialized water surface for developing ecological shrimp and crab farming models. Each year, the district has more than 35 thousand tons of commercial shrimp and crab sold to the market and exported to foreign markets. “The locality recognizes great potential in the aquaculture sector. However, to develop sustainably, the district not only focuses on output but also on the quality and added value of the products. Building geographical indications for ecological shrimp and crab and planning farming areas are important steps to enhance the position of Ngoc Hien aquatic products in the market,” said Mr. Tran Hoang Lac, Chairman of the District People's Committee.

Not only shrimp and crab, oysters also have great potential. The district is proposing to plan 32 river routes with a length of over 182,000 m to develop an oyster farming model. According to Mr. Le Ngoc Lam, if well planned and developed, the district can supply more than 40,000 tons of commercial oysters to the market each year, bringing a significant source of income to the people.

Besides the successes, Ngoc Hien is also facing a number of challenges such as climate change, epidemics, fluctuating market prices, lack of investment capital and unsynchronized application of science and technology.

Mr. Le Ngoc Lam, Chairman of the District Farmers' Association, said that Ngoc Hien has great potential in the field of aquaculture, but the locality still faces difficulties, that is, farmers operate in a way that each person does their own thing, and have not yet linked production to collect goods at a single point to build a brand, increase market competitiveness, both meet product requirements in processing and limit dependence on water levels.

Production linkage also aims to solve employment for local workers, leading to sustainable poverty reduction.

Ms. Nguyen Hong Dam, owner of Chau Sang production facility in Rach Goc town, said: “Our facility currently purchases more than 150 local seafood products, from dried shrimp, sour shrimp paste, to various types of dried fish, distributing and selling products mainly online and through social media channels. We have exported these products to demanding markets such as Japan, Korea, France... proving that the quality of our products can completely compete in the market."

Ngoc Hien district currently has 29 3-star OCOP products and 4 4-star products, with specialties such as dried shrimp, shrimp crackers, sour shrimp paste, crab crackers, oyster crackers, salted crab, painted fish sauce, mangrove chopsticks... The subjects have invested in machinery, packaging, labels and promoted products on e-commerce platforms, helping to expand the consumption market and create stable jobs for local workers.

“In the future, we will continue to link production, form cooperatives, and encourage people with adjacent shrimp farming areas to link up to develop a certified safe shrimp and crab farming model, from input breeds to consumption stages that are strictly inspected and aim to build geographical indications for local ecological shrimp and crabs. The goal is to increase profits and increase product competitiveness in the market. At the same time, we will link up with companies and factories in major provinces and cities to promote local specialties, creating a stable consumption channel for people,” Mr. Tran Hoang Lac shared./.
