Traffic around Tan Son Nhat airport shows signs of congestion at the end of the year, causing concern for many drivers and passengers. Many solutions have been proposed by the authorities.

The road is packed.

Although it is not yet the peak of the Lunar New Year, the gateway area of Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City is constantly congested. On the two roads leading to the airport, Bach Dang and Truong Son, the traffic is always packed, moving little by little.

The outer connecting routes such as Pham Van Dong, Cong Hoa, Hoang Van Thu, Truong Chinh are also in a similar situation.

Mr. Pham Van Phuoc (45 years old), a technology taxi driver, shared: "A trip carrying passengers to the airport definitely takes twice as long as other routes."

According to Mr. Phuoc, the cause of the traffic jam is due to the large number of vehicles, along with the overloaded roads leading to the airport.

According to Giao thong Newspaper reporters on the afternoon of January 15, although there was still more than an hour left until rush hour, Cong Hoa Street (Tan Binh District) had 3 traffic jams. At Hoang Hoa Tham overpass, Cong Hoa - Ut Tich intersection, Lang Cha Ca roundabout, thousands of cars and motorbikes crowded to pass the hot spots.

Ms. Ngoc (62 years old), who runs a restaurant on Truong Son Street, said in frustration: "With traffic jams like the past few days, passengers are bound to miss their flights. I have seen passengers getting out of taxis and dragging their suitcases into the airport several times because of traffic jams."

Expect 3 projects to be completed soon

A representative of the Tan Son Nhat Traffic Police Team, the unit in charge of the route, said that Cong Hoa Street has exceeded its designed capacity by nearly 150%. During rush hours, the unit has to use the solution of combining incoming and outgoing lanes to balance traffic. At the same time, barriers are used to temporarily close some intersections along the road to avoid conflicts with route directions.

"Congestion tends to increase even though the unit mobilizes maximum forces to regulate. If the peak flights during Tet holiday are concentrated during the day or fall during rush hour, the situation will be very difficult," said a representative of Tan Son Nhat Traffic Police Team.

According to the representative of the HCM City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, the Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa connecting road project and the Hoang Hoa Tham road expansion and upgrading project will open phase 1 to traffic before the Lunar New Year 2025.

With the expansion of traffic land area and the addition of new routes, traffic pressure in the area will be improved.

Along with the two above projects, the T3 Passenger Terminal project is also rushing to the finish line to be operational before April 30, 2025.

Mr. Le Khac Hong, Head of the T3 Terminal Project Management Board, said that the project has now reached nearly 90% of the total volume. The T3 domestic terminal has a capacity of 20 million passengers/year, serving 7,000 passengers/hour at peak times, helping to fundamentally resolve the overload and congestion at Tan Son Nhat airport.

Increased night flying, remote routing

According to Mr. Tran Van Hoach, Head of Service Quality Supervision Department, Southern Airports Authority, during the peak of Lunar New Year 2025 from January 21 to February 9, the number of flights will be increased to 48 flights/hour during the day and 46 flights/hour at night.

Domestic Terminal T3 of Tan Son Nhat International Airport is nearing completion.

Allocating a high number of flights at night is expected to reduce pressure on road traffic infrastructure while still meeting the travel needs of people returning home for Tet.

The Southern Airports Authority also requested the Traffic Police, Traffic Inspectors, and Tan Son Nhat Border Gate Police Station to increase inspection and handling of violations, and remotely divert traffic from the airport gateway routes to minimize congestion.

A representative of Tan Son Nhat International Airport said that it will continue to maintain interdisciplinary rapid response teams including: Airport Operations Control Center, Tan Son Nhat Airport Security, representatives of airlines, ground service units and representatives of functional units.

Rapid response teams will continuously update the situation of the area around the airport, bus station, check-in counter, terminal, and waiting room to coordinate the best decision making, ensuring smooth operations. The port also met with representatives of taxi companies, requesting a commitment to ensure enough vehicles to serve passengers during the peak of the Lunar New Year 2025.

To avoid flight delays, Tan Son Nhat International Airport recommends that passengers prepare appropriate, valid identification documents and monitor flight schedules.

According to regulations, check-in counters for domestic flights open 2 hours in advance. Combined with regular monitoring of traffic conditions in the area, passengers will be able to choose the right time to arrive at the airport. In addition, passengers can check-in online in advance.

In the context that the infrastructure of Terminal T1 has exceeded its designed capacity, people have limited the number of people coming to pick up and drop off passengers at the airport.
