Ho Chi Minh City The entrance to Metro Station No. 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) is designed with two steps and flexible water barriers that can withstand floods that only occur once every 100-300 years.
On the morning of October 17, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR - the investor) announced that the contractor had just installed water barriers at three underground stations of Metro Line 1, including: Ben Thanh, City Theater and Ba Son. This item was included in the design before the project was implemented.
These gates are designed based on data on the highest possible water level to prevent flooding at stations, in conditions where Ho Chi Minh City is greatly affected by climate change.
Accordingly, the entrances to underground stations are designed to be 30 cm higher than the 100-year flood level, and can be adjusted to block out even 300-year floods. According to this standard, the entrances to underground stations have two steps, with water barriers with corresponding heights ranging from 30 cm to 90 cm. In addition, there is a roof arranged along the length of the door to keep out rain.
In case water exceeds the barrier, MAUR said that the station's flood prevention measures are calculated using many measures such as: using sandbags or high-capacity pumps to suck water from the tanks in the underground floors and then bring it out. The emergency evacuation of passengers on the lower floors in case of water overflow has also been specifically planned.
Nearly 20 km long, Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien is the first urban railway line in Ho Chi Minh City, with a total investment of more than 43,700 billion VND. The entire line has 14 stations, including 3 underground stations (all in District 1) and 11 elevated stations. The project is now more than 95% complete, expected to be commercially operational from July next year.
