North Korea launched the Malligyong-1 satellite on a new type of Chollima-1 rocket on the evening of November 21, after two failed launches in May and August. The country said it would launch more satellites in the future to better spy on South Korea and "areas of interest to the country." Kim, his wife Ri Sol-ju and their daughter attended a banquet on November 23 to celebrate the launch. Also in attendance were senior officials at NATA, scientists, rocket engineers, and senior military and government officials.

In another development, South Korean Navy Chief of Staff Yang Yong-mo and his US counterpart Lisa Franchetti held talks on November 24 on the US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson docked at Busan port (South Korea) to strengthen military cooperation.
