How to identify Vietnamese social network users?

It is a fact that in recent years, the situation of fake and toxic news on the Internet has been increasing and causing many consequences for users. To completely handle this situation, a proposal has been made that social media accounts need to be identified, and must have an identity to be able to comment. This applies to cross-border accounts as well.

So how is account identification and user identity verification done on digital platforms?

Previously, the Ministry of Information and Communications also proposed this plan to manage social network users. In the draft Decree replacing Decree No. 72 and 27 on the management, provision and use of Internet services and online information, the Ministry added the requirement that cross-border social networks must also register and authenticate their accounts.

The Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information said that from 2023, user authentication on social networks will usually be done through three forms: email, phone number or identification documents. Of which, phone number is chosen by the majority of Vietnamese users. After the information standardization process, tens of millions of junk SIM cards and unregistered SIM cards have also been processed.

Besides, according to statistics, domestic networks have implemented authentication by email (30%), phone number (30%) and the remaining 40% of users choose one of the two forms.

For years, Facebook users have had to authenticate via email or phone number. Vietnamese users and some users in many regions had to use their real names to use the platform. Now, this rule has been relaxed, but when there are issues related to the account, users must use identification documents for approval.

YouTube and Google apps do not require identity verification when creating an account. However, users also need to enter a phone number for verification and security. Those who earn money from this app are required to provide personal identity to receive payments. TikTok app requires authentication via phone number or email depending on the user's registration process.
