Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), one of India's closest strategic partners in West Asia, today, June 23, to review bilateral ties and map out new areas of cooperation.
According to a brief statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Mr. Jaishankar will hold talks with his UAE counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on a range of issues in the bilateral partnership.
“The visit will provide an opportunity to review the entire spectrum of the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the UAE as well as regional and global developments,” the statement said.
The Israel-Hamas conflict and its impact on the region are expected to figure in Jaishankar's discussions with the UAE, sources close to the matter told Hindustan Times .
India and the UAE upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2015 and signed a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) in February 2022. The trade deal is expected to increase bilateral trade in goods to $100 billion within five years.
India's major exports to the UAE include precious metals, jewellery, minerals, refined petroleum products, food items such as cereals, sugar, fruits, vegetables, tea, meat, seafood and textiles. India mainly imports petroleum and petroleum products, precious metals and chemicals from the UAE. In 2021-22, India imported 21.664 million tonnes of crude oil from the Gulf nation.
Two-way trade increased from $43.3 billion in 2020-21 to $72.87 billion in 2021-22.
The UAE is also home to 3.3 million Indian citizens, one of the largest concentrations of expatriates in West Asia.
Before arriving in the oil-rich kingdom, India's top diplomat paid a visit to Sri Lanka, paying a courtesy call on Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on June 20.
