Philosophy has a natural appeal
Yesterday, August 5, at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, opened the course "Foundations of Analytical Philosophy: Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein", with Dr. Trinh Huu Tue as lecturer. The course had the participation of Professor Ngo Bao Chau as a guest speaker in the final part of the segment on Frege. The course consists of 12 sessions, lasting until August 28. This is a free course, for those who study or work in philosophy, and love philosophy. Lecturers and speakers do not receive any remuneration.
Dr. Trinh Huu Tue at the basic analytical philosophy class
Dr. Trinh Huu Tue said that he took charge of the basic course in analytical philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, "simply because I like it". "I have a group of friends, of whom three are currently in this class. We have been discussing the book The Foundations of Arithmetic (Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik ) , a publication considered to be a masterpiece by Gottlob Frege, for more than a year. I want to continue that discussion space on a broader scale", Dr. Trinh Huu Tue said.
According to Dr. Trinh Huu Tue, analytical philosophy is an indispensable content in any philosophy department. However, it seems that in philosophy departments of universities in Vietnam, analytical philosophy does not seem to be given much attention. Meanwhile, many philosophy students in Vietnam are very excited when given the opportunity to discuss analytical philosophy.
Accepting to teach the course with the mindset of "having fun is the main thing", Dr. Trinh Huu Tue did not set any goals or expectations for the course: "A class like this is quite crowded. At first, I thought there would only be about five or seven people participating. But I guess the number of people staying until the last session will be very small, only those who really like it will stay. This subject, if not thoroughly understood, will not be fun. If it is just a quick overview to get the main ideas, it will be useless."
When asked about how to attract more young people to study philosophy, Dr. Trinh Huu Tue said that this is not a matter of concern. Philosophy itself has a natural appeal, because it satisfies the desire for knowledge - which is an inherent need of each person.
Dr. Trinh Huu Tue commented: "Everywhere, philosophy is not for the majority. But there will always be a group of people who find philosophy attractive, find it interesting enough to give philosophy a satisfactory attention. There are things that are too obscure, too difficult to understand, too ethereal... that make people feel very difficult to grasp. But analytical philosophy is very specific, clear, even when people do not understand, they still see something to understand."
Hope the community has a more open view of philosophy
According to Dr. Tran Thi Dieu, Vice Head of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, for a long time, the Faculty of Philosophy has been organizing lectures and talks, with the enthusiastic support of domestic and foreign experts. For example, the faculty is currently regularly holding a series of lectures to supplement natural science knowledge for lecturers and learners, led by the philosophy in natural science group led by Associate Professor Nguyen Hoang Hai (Vice Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi), with the participation of Professor Ngo Bao Chau.
The basic course of analytical philosophy by Dr. Trinh Huu Tue is of interest to many students.
Dr. Tran Thi Dieu said: "The basic analytical philosophy course of Dr. Trinh Huu Tue is a long-standing wish of the teachers and students of the Faculty of Philosophy. In Vietnam today, there is a need to study philosophy, but courses like this are still limited. Dr. Trinh Huu Tue is a researcher with many in-depth contributions in the field of linguistic philosophy, so Dr. Trinh Huu Tue's lectures will certainly help lecturers and philosophy students gain deeper knowledge."
During the classes, the speakers and readers will read and discuss classic works together, from which students will learn how to read, how to exchange, and how to debate. In particular, through the course, the Faculty of Philosophy hopes to spread the spirit of philosophy in the community, making the community have a more open view of philosophy.
"Initially, the organizers planned for Dr. Trinh Huu Tue to lecture in a classroom with about 20 seats. However, the number of registrations reached more than 300 people, so the school arranged for the course a larger classroom with a capacity of 40 people.
The student body is very diverse, of all ages (from 20 to 50 - 60 years old). There are lecturers of the Faculty of Philosophy. There are philosophy researchers, postgraduates, students, and philosophy students. In particular, there are some students from other majors. This registration is a valuable information channel for reference about the attractiveness of philosophy, thereby showing that philosophy as a science always has its own place," Dr. Tran Thi Dieu shared.
Dr. Trinh Huu Tue is currently working in Germany. He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, UK and his Habilitation from Humboldt University, Germany. His research focuses on syntax, semantics, pragmatics and Wittgenstein's early philosophy. His publications include Synthese, Linguistics & Philosophy, Natural Language Semantics, Journal of Pragmatics.
