Aranza, 22, had to have eye surgery after repeatedly using the trick of cleaning her eyelids with coconut oil and makeup remover.
At first, when her eyelids were swollen and itchy, Aranza thought it was a stye, ignoring the symptoms and thinking that it would get better over time. "I tried home remedies for styes, soaking my eyes in hot and cold water, but it didn't work," she said.
She visited two ophthalmologists for examination, who concluded that the culprit for her eye damage was coconut oil, requiring surgery. Surprised by this diagnosis, Aranza decided to share her story on TikTok to warn against abusing beauty tips spread online.
"My message is to be very cautious when receiving information on social media and to trust the advice of experts. I have used coconut oil for many years without any problems, but that does not mean it is harmless," she shared.

Many social media users have suggested alternative solutions to remove makeup residue from eyelids. Others have shared similar experiences after using eyelash growth products.
On some personal pages, users often share videos using coconut oil as an emulsifier to remove makeup. This topic attracts more than 10 million views on TikTok. They call it a "natural alternative method".
According to dermatologist Whitney Bowe, MD, coconut oil works to dissolve makeup, but it's difficult to remove even if people wash their faces multiple times afterward.
“Sometimes it leaves a thin film. So people with acne who use coconut oil to remove makeup can get worse even if they wipe the oil off with a cloth or wash it off with water,” she says.
