At the end of 2023, the Industry and Trade sector recorded the industrial production value (at 2010 comparative prices) in Binh Thuan reaching more than 40,610 billion VND, an increase of 3.8% over the previous year.
Notably, the electricity, gas, hot water, steam and air conditioning production and distribution sector reached VND 16,822.7 billion (up 11.66%), thus contributing significantly to the overall growth of the local economy. Especially in the energy sector, the whole province has 47 power plants in operation generating electricity with a total capacity of 6,523.21 MW, in the past year reaching an electricity output of 26.5 billion kWh (an increase of more than 10% compared to the previous year). In terms of renewable energy alone, Binh Thuan has 35 wind and solar power plants in operation generating electricity with a total capacity of 1,404.31 MW, in 2023 participating in production reaching an electricity output of about 2,969 million kWh. According to the Department of Industry and Trade, thermal power currently contributes the highest electricity output with 77.39%, followed by hydropower with 10.57%, solar power with 9.16% and wind power with 2.88%...
However, in the near future, Binh Thuan's energy industry is expected to have a strong transformation thanks to a number of large-scale LNG gas-power projects approved by competent authorities and implementing investment preparation procedures. Specifically, the two LNG Thermal Power Plant projects Son My I and Son My II (with a total capacity of 4,500 MW) have a total investment capital of more than 4 billion USD and have been approved by the Power Plan VIII... In addition, in the province, there is also the Son My LNG Port Warehouse project with a designed capacity of phase 1 of 3.6 million tons of LNG/year and phase 2 of about 6 million tons of LNG/year. It is known that this project is implemented in Son My commune, Ham Tan district with the goal of: LNG regasification warehouse serving 2 LNG gas-power plants (Son My I and Son My II), LNG import port.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Binh Thuan, the Son My I LNG Thermal Power Plant project (capacity of 2,250 MW) is invested in the form of BOT, with an expected implementation schedule in the period of 2021 - 2028. Currently, the investor is completing the Feasibility Study Report as required by the Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy (Ministry of Industry and Trade), and at the same time implementing investment preparation steps according to regulations. As for the Son My II LNG Thermal Power Plant project (capacity of 2,250 MW), it is also invested in the form of BOT, with an expected implementation schedule from 2023 - 2028. Meanwhile, the Son My LNG Port Warehouse project is being promoted by the investor to implement investment preparation steps according to regulations, with an expected completion schedule by the end of 2027...
Thus, in the coming years, when the two LNG gas-electricity projects and the Son My LNG Port Warehouse are completed and put into operation, and with nearly 50 power plants participating in power generation in Binh Thuan, it will create momentum for local industry, especially the energy sector, to rise to its full potential. In addition, the power grid system (500 kV, 220 kV, 110 kV, medium voltage and low voltage) is also being invested in, renovated and upgraded regularly to meet the socio-economic development and security and defense of the province. Thereby, aiming to make Binh Thuan a national energy center, continuing to be a locality that not only supplies electricity to the key economic region in the South, but also contributes to ensuring national energy security.
In addition to 35 renewable energy power plants in operation, including 9 wind power plants (total capacity of 294.2 MW), 26 solar power plants (total capacity of more than 1,110 MW), Binh Thuan currently has 1 wind power project (capacity of 29.7 MW) that has completed construction but has not yet been put into operation or commercial power generation, and 2 wind power projects (capacity of 119.8 MW) in the process of investment and construction implementation...
