Those are the "gut-wrenching" things that Mr. Dong Luong Son, former general director of Yasaka-Saigon-Nhatrang Hotel, told students of Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City at a career orientation session in mid-November 2024.

Talking about his life and his tireless efforts for his career, Mr. Dong Luong Son said he was a student at Petrus Ky School (now Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted).
His dream back then was to become a pilot. But the Fatherland called, he went to join the battlefield in Cambodia, becoming Uncle Ho's soldier.
Assigned to do well
After the war, in 1980 he returned and was assigned to the hotel and restaurant industry as a waiter. The hotel industry in Vietnam at that time faced many difficulties and challenges because it was still young.
"Everyone learned, boldly worked, learned while working. The students at Petrus Ky School at that time were all excellent students, but when I started working, I did not rely on myself being better than anyone else and thought that if I was assigned a task, I had to do it well. So I was very happy to be a waiter, and also gained trust in this job," Mr. Dong Luong Son recalled.
Dreaming of becoming a pilot but starting out as a waiter in a hotel restaurant did not discourage Mr. Dong Luong Son.
From waiter to bartender, to shift leader, team leader, restaurant manager… Mr. Dong Luong Son was trusted to attend 3-month and 6-month management courses abroad.
Must be eager to learn, progressive, passionate
Foreign languages and a love of learning have given Mr. Dong Luong Son certain advantages in pursuing his career.
He was sent by the company to study abroad, then brought what he learned back to manage the company. After that, he was promoted to the position of general manager of the Yasaka-Saigon-Nhatrang Hotel, a hotel system of Saigontourist joint venture with Japan.
From the position of waiter to the position of general director, according to Mr. Dong Luong Son, it is a process of striving, effort and perseverance.
"Not everyone who graduates from a prestigious school can become a manager and be successful. Going from the lowest position to the highest position requires not only diligence and hard work, but also a desire to learn, progress, and passion for the job," he emphasized.
Mr. Son also affirmed that he wanted to share this with students currently in school so that they can have a comprehensive and serious view of the career they will pursue after graduation.

Because he loves his job, wherever he goes, Mr. Son collects artifacts and souvenirs so that after retirement he can remember his trips and memories of his work.
He then included those memorabilia and artifacts in his "My Job" collection. In 2022, his "My Job" stamp collection simultaneously won two awards: the Large Vermeil Award and the Special Prize at the 2022 Indonesia World Stamp Championship Exhibition.
The exhibition attracted more than 500 stamp collectors from 61 countries and territories. He alone brought 5 stamp frames, with more than 500 stamps and postal items.
Bring your career story to students
From November 11 to 15, the stamp collection "My Job" was brought by author Dong Luong Son to Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted to exhibit, to inspire career aspirations for students here.
